This quarter, the consistent execution of AB InBev global strategy drove continued momentum, delivering another period of top- and bottom-line growth with margin expansion. Our performance is a testament to the strength of the beer category, our diversified footprint, and the dedication of our teams. Africa was once more an important contributor for this performance. South Africa continued momentum delivered double-digit top- and bottom-line growth with margin expansion. In Nigeria, total volumes grew by high-single digits. Revenue grew by strong double-digits, driven by revenue management initiatives in a highly inflationary environment. In our other markets in the Africa Zone, we grew volume in aggregate by high-single digits in 3Q24, driven by Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, and Ghana. "The Change Paradox: Why Organizations Struggle to Embrace Change" ?? Despite the cacophony of calls for change, many organizations fail to walk the talk. Change is not merely an external façade or a showy slogan; it demands internal transformation. The film industry serves as a stark example. Talented individuals are often typecast, limiting their growth and potential. The same industry that claims to inspire social change struggles to change itself. The business world is equally culpable. Conclaves, seminars, and meetings abound, yet meaningful change remains elusive. Leaders who champion change often resist it themselves, stifling innovation. HR leaders play a pivotal role in driving transformation. However, they often prioritize headcount over talent development. Sales leaders seek cookie-cutter candidates, overlooking potential game-changers. The prevailing organizational culture is myopic: "Unless you've sold our product, you're not a sales man." This mindset ignores the power of fresh perspectives and strategies that outsiders of the domain can bring. Job changes and orientation can inject new ideas, but industry leaders must recognize and nurture hidden talent. The experienced-CEO conundrum illustrates this point: if no one picks non-experience, how will industries fill all vacancies with experienced CEOs ? Britvic, a UK-based soft-drinks supplier, has rejected two takeover bids from Carlsberg Group. Carlsberg's latest offer, sent on June 11, was around £3.2 billion ($3.9 billion) for Britvic, or 1,250 pence per share. Britvic stated that the second proposal undervalues the company and its future prospects. Carlsberg, one of the world's largest brewers, believes that a deal would allow them to capture long-term growth opportunities from Britvic's leading brands in the beverage market. Carlsberg's acquisition aligns with their growth strategy to expand beyond beer. Carlsberg markets its own soft drinks, while Britvic handles PepsiCo's beverages in the UK and Ireland. Carlsberg takes a disciplined approach to evaluating acquisitions and will only proceed with a transaction that is strategically and financially attractive. If an offer is made, it is likely to be in cash and fully debt financed. The second offer for Britvic represented an implied enterprise value multiple of over 13 times Britvic's adjusted EBITDA. It also marked a premium of 29% to Britvic's closing price prior to press speculation. Both parties have stated that there is no certainty another offer will be made. In the first half of fiscal year 2024, Britvic reported a 10.9% increase in revenue, a 15.3% increase in EBIT, and a 10.1% rise in profit after tax. The company's revenue primarily comes from its business in Great Britain, accounting for 68% of its revenue. Britvic also operates in other markets, such as France and Brazil. INCREMENTALISM VERSUS FRESH THINKING While still a relative newcomer to PepsiCo in the early 90’s, the late Roger Enrico, former CEO of PepsiCo, coined the term ‘the tyranny of incrementalism’, stating that ‘real change will never come about if we first don’t free ourselves from the belief that somehow dramatic results will come about from un-dramatic actions’. Following that declaration, the organization made sweeping changes that brought about astounding growth over the following decade…more specifically at Frito Lay, where the org was delayered in favour of frontline-based decision making, with savings invested vigourously in product quality and brand marketing. The challenge today is that governments, businesses, and the general public, get too vested in past methods that may have worked well at one time (look at the many dated laws and tax schemes). Think about the public fervour that stemmed from unfamiliar paths such as free trade, the management of COVID, or emerging trends such as Ozempic use, carbon reduction goals (ESG) or the soon-to-be, cashless society. With change as an accelerating constant, there has never been a more critical time for fresh thinking. In the CPG world, we’ve witnessed a massive change in how consumers engage with brands (or not), as the demand for something that’s ‘for me’ has stolen the growth prospects from traditional brands and categories. The old playbook ain’t working anymore. In CPG, the vicious battle for the last 20 years has been for share of the profit pool between retailers and manufacturers. Rather than figuring out how to sell more (eg- innovation in products and processes), it’s about buying better, which has led to a profit blood-letting for suppliers in Canada. Now most of the Canadian divisions of multinationals are largely a stripped-down version of what they once were, robbed of whatever creative or local decision-making that existed previously. The ‘code of conduct’ is a good start, but it took a lot of will and hard work to get it to the alignment stage. Execution will be the true test of its success. Without proper research and insight, just being bold would be a fool’s game. However, even with a well-staged change plan, it still requires a high level of risk, all while suffering the pain of detractors, both internal and external. After all, who wants to risk losing their job? Politicians understand that one better than any. Recommendations are being made to label certain foods with an unhealthy processed foods(UPF) warning. This would be useful in helping consumers to choose a healthier or less processed option, with a just a quick glance of the label. I think it would also push food manufacturers to remove certain additives and find healthier alternatives.
