Today we start an advertising campaign for our online doctor service - www.webdoctor.ie - it will run on outdoor billboards, buses, radio and online. We are focusing on the convenience factor of getting an immediate GP appointment, at your time of choosing, from the comfort of your own home (with prescription, if needed, emailed straight to your pharmacy). The notion of waiting several days for an appointment in a bricks and mortar clinic, hauling your sick self (or child) in to a practice and...WAITING...doesn't feel very 21st century- and doesn't always need to be the way! How we do everything else (read books, watch movies, book hotels) has benefitted from technology - webdoctor.ie is doing the same for GP visits.

Today myself and our FP&A lead will deep dive into our Irish operation, looking at the growth, opportunities and strategy in our first foreign market. Whilst our Irish launch has been a huge success in its own right, it’s played a crucial role in our broader internationalisation and expansion strategy. 🛑 🚗 It’s allowed us to get comfortable operating in barrier-led markets and sectors, rather than the pure play ANPR we more commonly deploy in the UK. This has led us to create a fully proprietary exit lane kiosk, adapt our ANPR solution so that it can interface with any barrier, build out intercom support and establish a relationship to manual enforcement offerings. 🇪🇺 💵 It’s pushed us to extend our solution to be multi-lingual and multi-currency. 🚘 It’s seen us adapt our solution to support detection and processing of number plates in any format. 📈It’s allowed us to validate and confirm that our strong unit economics are not purely UK-specific. 🌐 It’s seen us ready our domain and infrastructure strategy to be multi-domain and locally-served. Many of those developments have bled into our UK offering, and given us confidence with local authority and alternative sectors we would otherwise not have been optimised for.

I am immensely proud of the BT Young Scientist Business Bootcamp initiative created in BT Ireland in 2009 and in collaboration with Nova UCD since 2013. In an independently produced survey with Amárach Research about business costs, small businesses were asked about the impact of rising business costs in the past 12 months. This survey revealed that 83% of small businesses in Ireland are facing escalating costs.   Moreover, 35% of businesses report that they cannot continue trading beyond six months without additional funding. David Broderick, Director of the SFA, underscores the severity of the situation: “The fact that over a third of small businesses will run out of liquidity within six months without any financial aid shows how cash-strapped they are. One in five small businesses have secured funding from friends and family to cope with rising costs. The SDG Challenge seeks to support diverse, transdisciplinary teams to develop transformative, sustainable solutions that will contribute to addressing development challenges under the UN SDGs in countries where Irish Aid works.
