Jonathan Swift Festival celebrates the life and works of Jonathan Swift, the renowned satirist and author of Gulliver's Travels and our founder here at St. Patrick's Mental Health Services. The festival includes a range of events including lectures, performances, and guided walks that explore his influence on literature and satire. One event in particular we’re looking forward to is Jonathan Swift: Savage Indignation, which, on 22 November, will explore the life of Jonathan Swift through interviews, drama and music. Presented by Gerry Mullins, the unique show features an interview with Swift expert and our former Medical Director, Professor Jim Lucey. Professor Lucey will be joined by Cathy Scuffil, Dr Brendan Twomey and the choir of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. You can find out more about this performance and all the other events below: https://lnkd.in/emCWwC3B

On this day, 298 years ago, the four-part satirical work, Gulliver's Travels, was published. Written by our founder, Jonathan Swift, the book is a satire on human nature and is considered a classic of English literature. On his death in 1745, Swift left the majority of his fortune (£12,000) to found a hospital for those experiencing mental illness, originally known as St Patrick's Hospital for Imbeciles. First opened in 1746, the hospital is now known as St. Patrick's Mental Health Services.
