throw a/the match
throw a/the match
To lose some competitive game intentionally, especially in order to take advantage of the bets placed on one's odds of winning. Don't you think it's suspicious that they were totally dominating throughout the first half, then they suddenly went to pieces and lost? I'm convinced that they threw the match. A: "You want us to throw the championship match?" B: "You'll each stand to make a million dollars if you do." You can keep your money. I've never thrown a match in my life, and I'm not about to start now!
