shut in

1. To force someone or something to be confined within an enclosed space. A noun or pronoun can be used between "shut" and "in." If you shut the dogs in for too long, they start could go crazy and start breaking things. The teacher shut us in the classroom until we completed the assignment.
2. To surround someone or something, especially so as to impede movement or egress. A noun or pronoun can be used between "shut" and "in." In order to shut the enemy in, we blew up the bridge leading out of the valley and sent our forces to the other side.
