screw back

In cue sports (billiards, snooker, pool, etc.), to put a backspin on the cue ball when cuing. The verb can be used transitively or intransitively. Screwing back helps maintain an advantageous position on the table when sinking shots. He screwed the cue ball back so that it would tap the eight ball into the corner pocket and then return back to the center of the table.
