half-murder

An instance of extreme but non-fatal harm inflicted on someone. Primarily heard in India. That case in Mumbai was an instance of half-murder—the victim did live, though he was severely injured by the attacker. The half-murder left the victim bedridden and blind in one eye. I remember that case—the guy took such a severe beating that I'm still amazed it only ended up being a half-murder.
