1. Literally, to approach someone or something with the intent of killing it. The lion closed in for the kill when it saw the injured antelope. The cat will close in for the kill soon enough—he's just toying with that mouse for now. Once the hit man spotted his target, he closed in for the kill.
2. By extension, to approach someone or something with the intent to achieve a particular outcome. If someone finally shows interest in buying the house, I'm sure our realtor will close in for the kill. As soon as the group of tourists arrived, the pickpockets closed in for the kill. Even though I'm not the most decisive person, I will close in for the kill when I know, deep-down, that I want something.

2. Fig. to get ready to do the final and climactic part of something. The car salesman closed in for the kill with contract and pen in hand.
