slang To defeat someone decisively in a competition. Despite using the word "socks," this phrase does not involve literally stripping off someone's clothes. The final score was 17–1? Wow, we really beat the socks off that team! As predicted, that candidate dominated in the election and beat the socks off her opponent. The young team's inexperience showed on the field today, as the veteran squad beat the socks off them.
