Sebelum pengumuman resminya, lagu ini terdaftar di ASCAP dan di bahas oleh berbagai stasiun radio Amerika Serikat seperti 104,7 KISS FM.[2] Gomez akhirnya mengkonfirmasi perilisan tersebut melalui media sosial pada tanggal 1 Mei 2018, serta dimasukkannyanya dalam soundtrack musim kedua seri asli Netflix, 13 Reasons Why, di mana ia mengambil bagian sebagai produser eksekutif.[3] Lagu ini ditayangkan perdana pada 10 Mei 2018 di acara radio Apple Music Zane Lowe, Beats 1 sebagai hari rilis "World Recors". Dia juga diwawancarai oleh Lowe dan mengkonfirmasi bahwa album solo studio ketiganya sementara diselesaikan.[4][5]

"Back to You" ditulis oleh Parrish Warrington, Diederik Van Elsas, Amy Allen, Micah Premnath dan Selena Gomez. Produksi ditangani oleh Trackside dan Ian Kirkpatrick.[5] Lagu ini digambarkan sebagai midtempo akustik emosional[5][6] dengan pengaruh country, juga disebut "lagu dance-pop", serta balada electropop dan EDM.[7] Gomez mengatakan bahwa lagu ini adalah "lagu yang sangat istimewa" dan bahwa ia menginginkannya menjadi "pesan yang indah dengan cara yang sangat rumit tetapi sangat menyenangkan".[8]
