The 10th ASEAN+3 Junior Science Odyssey was successfully conducted in Siem Reap, Cambodia from July 22-26, 2024. With the theme of “Racing Up Against Climate Change,” this year’s event featured a variety of engaging educational activities for students, such as a series of lectures about climate change, tree planting, water resource management training, lab experiments, video and pitch competition on climate change mitigation, and site visits in Siem Reap. This event is aimed to inspire and drive talented high school students in ASEAN Member States (AMS), China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea (ROK), to achieve excellence, ignite their intellectual inquisitiveness with a stronger international network and drive them to pursue careers in the realm of science and technology.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam then joined on 8 January 1984, Viet Nam on 28 July 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN. Co-Chaired by Lao PDR and Malaysia, the 16th Meeting of the HLTF-ACV started today, 31 July 2024, in Melaka, Malaysia with drafting sessions of the APSC Strategic Plan. The ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and the Strategic Plans of the three Community Pillars and ASEAN Connectivity are expected to be adopted in 2025.

Today, ASEAN Smart Cities Network Conference on Smart Solutions for Solving Urban Issues was convened in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. The Conference was hosted by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Lao PDR as the ASCN Chair this year. The Conference was attended by more than 100 representatives from national and local governments of ASEAN Member States, external partners, academia, and private sectors. The Conference discussed on (i) the progress and challenges of smart cities in ASEAN; (ii) innovative solutions to support cities to tackle the urban issue; and (iii) how to forge partnership among national and local governments both between cities in ASEAN and other countries, international partners, communities, businesses, and academia to advance smart and sustainable urban development in the region. #smartcities #ASEAN #ASCN

On 31 July 2024, at the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat, the Fifth Meeting of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (5th AITIGA-JC) was convened to discuss the review of the AITIGA to make the Agreement more user-friendly, simple, and trade facilitative for businesses in order to increase ASEAN-India trade as well as support sustainable and inclusive growth. The Meeting was co-chaired by Ms. Mastura Ahmad Mustafa, Deputy Secretary General (Trade), Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, Malaysia and Mr. Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India. The Meeting was attended by the representatives from ASEAN Member States (AMS), India and the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC).

The 7th ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) Annual Meeting was held on 30 July 2024 in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. National and local governments from ASEAN Member States gathered to discuss efforts in furthering smart and sustainable city development in the region, including exchanging experiences in implementing their smart city projects. The ASEAN Artists Residency Programme (AARP) presents the vibrant creativity of Southeast Asia’s emerging artists. 🎨 The artist is selected and awarded a month-long residency. The Programme provides the artist a studio to create art pieces that will be part of the ASEAN’s Gallery’s permanent collection. The artist also gets opportunities to join cultural exchanges, access public-education programmes, and gain exposure to other promotional activities. The AARP continues to foster artistic growth and regional collaboration to celebrate the region’s rich cultural heritage.
