It’s Global Hydropower Day and we’re proud to celebrate the positive impacts of sustainable #hydropower on people and communities around the world. 🌎 Our involvement in significant hydropower projects began over 100 years ago when our founder Sir Murdoch MacDonald worked on the Aswan Dam in Egypt. The legacy continued with early #PumpedStorage projects in the UK, such as Dinorwig and Ffestiniog in Wales. Today, our expertise spans large megawatt schemes like the 884MW Suki Kinari plant high in the Himalayan mountains in Pakistan and we're proud to continue to support our clients on global hydropower projects from water to wire. Explore how we're harnessing the full potential of efficient hydro. 👇 https://mottm.ac/3ehd1pi International Hydropower Association (IHA) #RenewableEnergy

We have officially arrived on the Sunshine Coast! Our team has been working on transformative projects on the Sunshine Coast for many years, and we are thrilled to have recently opened our new office in Maroochydore. We're excited to have more opportunities to connect with our clients in-person, and be closer to our projects. We enjoyed hosting our official opening of the office last week, not only showcasing the office, but also unveiling Maroochy Middens, a newly commissioned artwork by local Kabi Kabi artist Zartisha Davis. Commenting on the opening, Daniel Caldwell, our state manager for Queensland, said: “We are involved in fantastic projects in the region, including the Borumba Pumped Hydro project and the Sunshine Coast Public Transport project, and our new office will allow us to connect more closely with our clients, partners and communities.”

On this day in our history, the Tyne Bridge opened in Newcastle, UK demonstrating the success of a new construction method, known as progressive cantilevering. 🌉 The innovation used cranes and cables to enable the #bridge to be built simultaneously from either side of the river and meet in the centre, without disturbing shipping traffic. Engineered by David Anderson of our predecessor firm Mott, Hay & Anderson, the two hinged steel arch bridge had the longest single span in the country at 162m. Its deck was suspended from the arch ribs in the centre and rested on spandrel columns at the abutments. “In order to begin the rib-erection with the elevation required to enable the two half arches to be within a few inches of meeting, the deflections of a number of panel-points throughout all stages were calculated. The movements of these were kept under observation throughout,” stated David Anderson in his Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) paper written in 1930. #SocialValue was at the heart of the project. To accelerate construction and create much needed local jobs, the Government asked for design to be undertaken at the same time the powers to build it passed through Parliament (the Bridge Act of 1924). Four years later, the Sydney Harbour Bridge opened after the same contractor that built #TyneBridge, Dorman Long & Co, applied this experience to the larger, similar structure. Join us in celebrating the anniversary of the Tyne Bridge and discover how our solid foundations in bridge #engineering are helping us connect communities today. 👇 https://mottm.ac/4h0lGaU #ThenNowTomorrow #OnThisDay #Heritage

Rapid technological advances. Cost of living pressures. Environmental considerations. When looking to the future, the UK’s transport policymakers are faced with increasingly complex and interwoven challenges. So how can we help them make sense of the noise? In July 2024, as part of London Transport Museum’s Interchange series, with partners Hitachi Rail and Gowling WLG, we published the Making Transport Fit for the Future report. The report provides policymakers with three simple building blocks that are key to creating real-world, practical policy solutions, with commuter needs at its heart: strong foundations, visionary outlook and bold transition. Today, alongside our partners, our transport and cities experts Annette Smith, Gerard Fitzpatrick, Clare Wildfire and Lucy Millier briefed the London General Assembly Transport Committee on the report. The discussion highlighted the importance of co-designing a vision through deep and thorough engagement with communities to better understand how changes (big and small) can enable more sustainable transport decisions. It was fantastic to attend the Systems Engineering Test and Evaluation Conference (#SETE24) in Melbourne! Khairulzaman K., Monica Dryden, David Healing, and Jon Lancaster, who are part of our Australian systems engineering and integration team, delivered insightful presentations on how we bring and tailor the best of systems engineering concepts, from assurance to integration, minimal viable capability, and operational readiness. The event provided a valuable platform for cross-industry learning, with rich exchanges of ideas from sectors such as rail, defence, energy, and health. This cross-pollination of ideas is crucial for driving innovation and excellence in our projects, allowing us to integrate best practices and cutting-edge solutions from various industries. Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the vibrant discussions. If you would like to continue the conversation, please get in touch with one of our specialists. We look forward to continuing our journey of innovation and growth in this space! #SETE2024 #SystemsEngineering #Innovation #SystemsAssurance #SystemsIntegration #MinimalViableCapability #Defence #Energy #Rail #Health #CrossIndustry
