Nebraska Cornhuskers women's basketball snaps losing streak

Tommorrow night, the Nebraska Cornhuskers men’s basketball team has a huge game against Wisconsin. Tonight, the women’s team got a pretty big win of their own over the Purdue Boilermakers, though why it was big was definitely a bit different.

Amy Williams squad took to the court in Lincoln smarting from two straight losses. It appears that the Huskers might have taken a little bit of their frustration out on the Purdue Boilermakers as they beat the conference rival 68-54.

It was far from a perfect game played by the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but during this part of the season, a win is a win is a win. And women’s basketball team needed to just get a win. The victory moves them to 14-7 on the season and 6-4 in the Big Ten.

Both of those marks are going to be important as Nebraska tries to get an NCAA Tournament bid. In that regard, they’re very similar to the men’s team. There was a time when both Huskers teams looked like they were near shoo-ins. 

Fred Hoiberg and company lost a bad one to Maryland and are about to embark on a tough enough stretch that there is now some doubt. Amy Williams and her crew have lost four of their last seven games. However, they have a chance to build up some wins before they take on two straight Top 10 teams.

More pressing on Wednesday was snapping a two game losing streak that included an ugly loss to a middling Penn State squad. The beat down by Iowa was a bit more palatable and soon Jaz Shelley and company will get a chance to take a measure of revenge.

Speaking of Shelley, she was one of five Nebraska Cornhuskers players that scored in double figures as she had 10 points. She also led the team in rebounds with 9 and dished out 4 assists.

Alexis Markowski and Darian White tied for the team lead in points with 14. Markowski added 7 rebounds and 3 assists while white had 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
