As the Paris Olympics' excitement winds down, it’s intriguing to see which new Chinese stars, like swimmer Pan Zhanle and tennis player Zheng Qinwen, continue to shine in the spotlight. Among them, Liu Qingyi, or B-Girl 671, brought home bronze in women’s breakdancing — showcasing the vibrant hip hop culture of her home province of Henan. We're excited to kick off our August theme on festivals and nights out. With the summer heat, escaping to music fests or going out after dark sound appealing. This week, Kyle Mullin looks at how some of China’s earliest indie rockers are interacting with a more professionalized, yet pricier music scene. It finally stopped raining in Shanghai! But now it’s boiling hot. Looking back on some of our streetwear coverage in June, this raises an important question — how do people wear all that stuff in extreme heat? In Singapore, writer Wei Ting Wong helped us get the scoop on the early days of cult fashion label Youths in Balaclava. Though co-founder Taufiq Iskandar didn’t share any tips for donning denim and leather in tropical climates, that doesn’t make the brand’s dizzying rise to the top of the fashion world any less impressive. Back in China, we had a look at how the success of Chinese hip hop is bringing a new wave of streetwear brands with it. Moving on from our June theme of streetwear, in July we’ll be focusing on sports. So stay tuned for looks at Chinese athletes at the Olympics, sports communities, and more. When we published the article “Manner Coffee Sees Two Customer-Barista Altercations in One Day” yesterday, we really should have led with a headline that made light of people forgetting their “manners.” Thanks to our dedicated Instagram readers who pointed this out; we’ll leave no dad joke unused going forward! But laughs aside, it’s a concerning story: while both the belligerent baristas and complaining customers behaved inappropriately, it’s easy to have sympathy for Manner staff facing extraordinary pressure, or even office workers just looking for a couple minutes of relaxation. If anything, it’s a reminder of all the hard work that goes into making China’s cities as dynamic as they are. For all the fans of Liu Cixin's Three-Body Problem TV series, here's some exciting news! Someone has already made the sequel 'Dark Forest' as a CGI film! It's been posted on China's Youtube equivalent, Bilibili, since June 23rd and is blowing up. . . Even more crazy is that it was entirely self-produced by an amateur animator without any external investment. Read more here and see the film at https://lnkd.in/guqrfZDk #Threebodyproblem #LiuCixin #scifi #DarkForest

Looking out the window at some very gray skies, it’s clear that “plum rain” (梅雨, méiyǔ) has arrived in Shanghai. Despite the evocative name, these seasonal rains can create hassles in a city where most people don’t have drying machines! But there is a positive side: this brief respite from scorching summer heat provides a chance to show off fits before it’s too hot to wear much besides shorts and a t-shirt. So grab that gorpcore rain shell from your closet, or check out our feature this week: a rundown of some of China’s hippest streetwear brands and where to pick up their merch in Shanghai. Subscribe to RADII’s newsletter now, and receive the best of RADII and Goldthread all-in-one! https://lnkd.in/gBSfdbpN As one of our stories highlighted last week, unripe bananas are getting unexpectedly popular with young Chinese office workers. Why? A punning connection between the pronunciation of the Chinese terms for “green banana” and “anxiety” have turned the fruits into anti-stress talismans. While the story is interesting enough for showing how Chinese millennials and Gen Z striking the balance between “laying flat” and holding down jobs, it also reveals something about how the economy is doing, and where young people are choosing to live: the whole phenomenon kicked off with a young entrepreneur returned to his hometown of Zhangzhou, Fujian province, and started selling bananas. E-commerce! Young people moving back to second-tier cities! A rabid trend cycle! It’s all there! #work #lifestyle #china #office #996 #lieflat #officeworkers #skateboard #photographer #nothing #carlpei #tech
