This project aims to improve gender equality and the socioeconomic empowerment of women living in rural and isolated areas of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, expand equitable access to ventures based on renewable energy, and increase women’s control over their time, income and productive resources.

Why is economic empowerment for rural women so important right now?

Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras have experienced an exponential increase in the prices of food and services in the last two years, the highest in the last decade. The figures are alarming due to the economic impact on many families. At the end of 2021, Central America ended with an inflation rate of 5.56 percent. In 2022, the high cost of living in Central America continued to rise along with an inflation rate as high as 8.7 percent. This was also the result of the crisis in Ukraine, which has caused the prices of fossil fuels, food and other goods to rise astronomically.

What is our plan?

We are working with five local organizations that have combined their expertise to develop an innovative implementation strategy for the project based on co-creation, collaboration and the exchange of experience and knowledge. They are helping rural women develop business leadership skills that enable them to exercise their economic, educational and decision-making rights.

Our strategies and programming focus on addressing the structural barriers that impede gender equality, taking into account the needs of those most affected by multiple forms of inequality.
