Pursuing an analysis of the myth and these material objects, Leshem argues that this seemingly discordant imagery presented a cautionary message to brides who remain anonymous in the sources.

That passage, together with a longer retelling of each individual myth in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, created a fertile ground for early modern artists to portray erotic and/or violent scenes between men and women or, in some cases, between men and other, often younger, men. Most notable are the visual representations of myths about the “love of the gods,” for example, the rape of Europa and the seduction of Leda on Cinquecento carved cassoni, which place the myths and their import in the context of sixteenth-century domesticity. In this study, I explore these images with a view toward the didactic messages that they might have conveyed and suggest that through such myths, the bride was exhorted to act in a chaste manner and the groom was warned against succumbing to lust.

Little did they suspect that several years after conceptualizing the figure and their many vain attempts to sell the story to various comic book publishers, their creation would give rise to the iconic genre of comic book superheroes. There is no doubt that the Superman character and the accompanying narrative led to Siegel and Shuster, the writer and artist, respectively, becoming famous. However, was it only the appealing character and compelling narrative that accounted for the story's enormous popularity, which turned its creators into such a celebrated pair, or did the visual design play a major part in that phenomenal success? Recent years have seen a burgeoning interest in the comic book medium in several disciplines, including history, philosophy, and literature. However, little has been written about its visual aspect, and comic book art has not yet been accorded much recognition among art historians. Since the integration of storyline and art is what allow the comic book medium to be unique and interesting, I contend that there should be a focus on the art as well as on the narrative of works in comic books. In the present study, I explore the significance of the visual image in the prototype of the Superman figure that Siegel and Schuster sold to DC Comics and its first appearance in the series American Comic Books. I argue that although the popularity of Superman's first appearance was due to the conceptual ideals that the character embodied, the visual design of the ideal man was also an essential factor in its success. Accordingly, through a discussion of the first published Superman storyline, I emphasize the artistic-visual value of the figure of this protagonist in particular and the comic book medium in general.

One was the renown Palestine Archeological Museum (the Rockefeller Museum), which was built in Jerusalem and became the most important British cultural institution in Palestine. Two little-known prospective museums were also planned: the “Northern District Museum,” a project that was to convert the ancient Acre arsenal into an exhibition space, and the Palestine Folk Museum, proposed for Jerusalem’s Citadel. This essay explores the role of these museums – both the built and unbuilt – in creating a museum culture in Palestine. We analyze the cultural politics and curatorial practices of the museums’ schemes, demonstrating that they provided a disciplinary and scientific basis for an unbiased negotiation of the region’s histories, people, and customs. This, in turn, contributed to the British construction of their own image as peaceful mediators in a conflicted land.

Both in Ancient Greece and in Ancient Rome, the myth was represented, alongside a variety forms of art, in funerary art, but in a different manner during each period of time. In Ancient Greece, the myth was represented on Apulian and South Italian vases, portraying the finale scene of the myth: Niobe’s petrification. In Ancient Rome, a shift is visible: the portrayal of the scene of the killing of Niobe’s children on sarcophagi reliefs.
The aim of this paper is to follow the iconography of each culture and to understand the reason for the shift in representation while comparing the two main media forms.

This panel aims to explore issues concerning representations of sex, sexuality, and gender as depicted in the private and/or public sphere of early modern Italy. To further this scholarly discussion, we welcome talks that consider the following questions: How did early modern artists and patrons use sexual imagery to elicit a certain type of reaction in its viewers? What types of images were considered “sexy” and meant to titillate their beholders? What kinds of visual media forms were prominent in this discourse (painting, maiolica, cassoni, print, etc.)? Who were the intended viewers of these works, and who had access to these pieces? Which images were considered non-conforming to morals and norms concerning sex and gender in early modern Italian society?
We invite papers that investigate and analyze topics including, but not limited to:
Representations of chastity and sexuality in the domestic sphere and beyond
Conforming and nonconforming depictions of femininity and masculinity
Biblical and mythological depictions featuring sexual/nuptial relationships
The relation between text and image in images featuring issues of gender and sexuality
The role of the nude in nuptial and non-nuptial works of art
Comparisons between normative and non-normative depictions of sex and love
Images that encourage or discipline female chastity
