Sydney is set to host a historic and culturally significant event in 2025, as 14 members of the Greek Presidential Guard, known as the Evzones, arrive in the city to participate in ANZAC Week commemorations. From 28 April to 4 May, the Evzones will participate in a series of events that celebrate the enduring bond between Greece and Australia, particularly through the shared spirit of the ANZACs.
This visit commemorates 125 years of Australians and Hellenes fighting side-by-side for their shared ideals and homelands. The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. This visit is the cornerstone of the Australian Hellenic community’s tributes to those who sacrificed so much for our present and future. Australian Hellenes served with colonial and Hellenic armed forces in conflicts across Africa and Europe. During World War I, on Lemnos Island, Macedonia, and the Gallipoli Peninsula, Anzacs and Hellenes united in defending freedom and democracy.

- Monday, 28 April (Evening): A Doxology service will be held at The Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady in Redfern, officiated by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios. This solemn service will set the tone for the week’s commemorations.
- Thursday, 1 May (Lunchtime): “ANZACs of Greece Luncheon” at Beta Grande. This event will celebrate Greek-Australians’ contributions to the ANZAC legacy.
- Friday, 2 May (Lunchtime): A Guard of Honour ceremony will be held at the Cenotaph in Martin Place, Sydney. This will be a poignant moment to reflect on the sacrifices of servicemen and women.
- Saturday, 3 May (Early Afternoon): The grand event of the week will be held at the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park. The Evzones will participate in a march and flag-raising ceremony, a highlight of the ANZAC Week commemorations.
A Celebration of Shared History
Between the wars, Anzac veterans contributed to humanitarian relief efforts as Greece dealt with the aftermath of the Hellenic Genocide. In World War II, the Second Generation Anzacs followed in their fathers’ footsteps, fighting the Nazis in Macedonia and mainland Greece and evacuating from the island of Crete. Australian Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel returned a few years later to liberate the Aegean Islands from Nazi occupation. In Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars, and beyond, Australians and Hellenes have continued to serve together, a tradition that still endures.
