UT Astronomers Race To Capture Image of Exoplanet Near Star

Graduate students Kyle Franson at The University of Texas at Austin and William Balmer at Johns Hopkins University — had to race against the clock to capture an image of AF Lep b, a relatively young gas giant. That’s because it’s moving closer to its host star in its orbit. The closer it gets, the harder it will be to observe.

Scientists Closing in on Answers About ‘Lost’ Prehistoric Cats of Natural Bridge Caverns

Last January, a team of cavers led by a paleontologist from UT Austin rappelled into two deep chambers at Natural Bridge Caverns to retrieve rare fossil finds: the bones of two small prehistoric cats. After recovering these small cat fossils, Jackson School of Geosciences doctoral student John Moretti is closing in on answers.

The AI model informs the design of protein-based therapies and vaccines by leveraging the underlying logic from nature’s evolutionary processes.

Architecture Students Designing With AI

With text prompts from students and photos of their architectural models, Daniel Koehler’s Advanced Design students can use AI to generate 50,000 images. Students then can evaluate intuitively where they see value among those thousands of designs. Koehler, who teaches the course, believes AI will free students to increasingly use emotional intelligence, soft skills, cognitive flexibility, communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking in their work.

Newly Discovered Antimicrobial Could Prevent or Treat Cholera

More than a million people each year die from infections by pathogens that are resistant to antimicrobials, and the problem is growing. Researchers at UT see promise in a class of natural antimicrobials called microcins. In a pair of recent papers, the researchers identify the first known microcin that targets the strains of bacteria that cause cholera and describe a method for finding microcins in bacterial genomes with the help of artificial intelligence.

Growing up in San Antonio, Mary Braunagel-Brown, had only a distant sense of herself as belonging to the Osage Nation and the broader Native American community. In recent years, the UT alum has provided the first-ever endowment gift for the Program in Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) at UT, a general fund she expects will support students in Native American and Indigenous Studies adjusting to life on campus.

Newly Discovered Antibody Protects Against All COVID-19 Variants

Sept. 3, 2024
Researchers have discovered an antibody able to neutralize all known variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, as well as distantly related SARS-like coronaviruses that infect other animals. The team, led by UT engineers and scientists, obtained the exact molecular sequence of the antibody, opening the possibility of manufacturing it on a larger scale for future treatments.
