Profile picture with transparency not updating correctly

This is my first time adding a picture for this profile, so I'm not sure which of the scenarios below will occur when changing a display picture:

Picture A gets swapped out for picture B that has some transparency, however in the transparent areas you will still see picture A showing through.
Alternatively, the default picture-less human icon shows below picture B.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Add a picture with transparency via the admin console
2. View the author profile page on the site
3. Observe that the old/default profile picture can still be seen underneath the new picture.
