Azure DevOps Service Hook Integration

Azure DevOps has a “Service Hooks” feature that can notify third-party services when certain events occur:

It would be useful to have this to do things like tell Sentry when a new release was pushed out. Using these could be a lot easier than the current solution of adding custom scripts to your build/release pipeline.

Thanks for the feature request, @ajbeaven. I think the goal makes sense (integrate with ADO and automatically get all the functionality without any code). When a release is created, it can be associated to one or more projects. I imagine we'll have to provide some functionality to be able to map a repository to projects to make this work.

Which webhooks were you thinking the integration could subscribe to? I imagine there's a few ways people deploy (by merging to main or cutting a release branch or something else). Also, do you know which scopes would be required to subscribe to those webhooks?

I ported this over from an issue posted a year ago in the Sentry forum on request, and to be honest, I can't really remember why at the time I concluded that Service Hooks were the way to go 😳. You're right - the goal here is to make various integration with Sentry easier, avoiding requiring your customers to interface with the CLI as part of their build process.

Looking at this with fresh eyes, I think it'd be easier for Sentry to just provide a 3rd party pipeline task in the marketplace to do this sort of thing. The current things I use the CLI for in my build/release pipelines are:

1. Creating a Sentry Release and associating commits to that Release
2. Notify Sentry that the Release was deployed

Using pipeline tasks avoid having to make the decisions you posed in your response (what constitutes a 'deployment') as that sort of stuff becomes explicit.

💯 Makes sense. We have a Github Action so I imagine you'd want an Azure pipeline that does something similar. Quick googling around showed me https://github.com/DanielHabenicht/AzurePipelines-sentry-cli so I imagine you could use something like that? Definitely get the preference for an official one but I doubt we're going to build that anytime soon to be honest, unless there's a significant demand for it.
