GRSciColl - make taxonomic coverage part of the general search #390
Comments
Hi @ManonGros again lovely to see these use cases being expressed and know that the TWDG CD group has included metadata concepts so that if used, the software will be able to do what this user is looking for :-) |
Indicating major taxonomic groups contained by a collection is indeed quite useful. Under the dashboarding task of SYNTHESYS+ and previously under ICEDIG attempts have been made to come up with unambiguous higher taxonomic groups SYNTHESYS+ D2.2 JOINT DASHBOARD OF COLLECTIONS ASSESSMENT TOOLS provided as appendix https://www.synthesys.info/content/dam/nhm-synthesys/synthesys-plus-deliverables/SYNTHESYS+%20D2.2%20Joint%20dashboard%20of%20collections%20assessment%20tools%20Final.pdf. This higher classification (e.g. Zoology vertebrates --> birds) can be mapped to the GBIF/COL backbone taxonomy https://www.gbif.org/species/212 |
Deployed to PROD the change to include the taxonomic coverage in the collections search. |
In addition to that, we also have collection descriptors that allow searching by scientific name. It is a matter now of converting the taxonomic coverage to collection descriptors. I will explore that (at least for some collections) in another issue. |
It would be nice to be able to look for collections containing a particular group like
Aves
. Ideally we would have a way to search directly the taxonomic coverage field, but in the meanwhile could the general search include taxonomic coverage? For example, make it possible for this collection to be included in the result of this search: https://registry.gbif.org/collection/search?q=Insecta
(This is a request coming from a node manager).
