Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Awards
The annual event recognizes the outstanding contributions made to American Fashion by individuals from all areas of the industry and related arts, with awards being given for design excellence in womenswear, menswear, and accessories as well as extraordinary accomplishments in journalism, creative vision, and lifetime achievement.
Nominations for each award category are submitted by the CFDA Fashion Awards Guild, an invitation only network comprised of top fashion retailers, journalists, stylists, influencers and the 450 plus member designers of the CFDA. The nominees, as well as recipients of the honorary awards are ratified by the CFDA Board of Directors.
2021
GEOFFREY BEENE Lifetime Achievement Award 2021 recipient, Dapper Dan
The Geoffrey Beene Foundation and the CFDA jointly established the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award to recognize outstanding designers like Dapper Dan. Born Daniel Day, Dapper Dan – as he is known – has long had an impact on fashion though through less traditional means than most. The Harlem-born and bred designer made a name for himself with his namesake store.

After a hiatus in 2020 because of the COVID Pandemic, the 2021 CFDA Fashion Awards was held at THE POOL + THE GRILL in New York City on November 10, 2021.

As a designer Mr. Mackie has impacted American fashion by consistently bringing glamour to some of the world’s most illustrious personalities, from Cher, Diana Ross and Bette Midler to Carol Burnett and RuPaul.

GEOFFREY BEENE Lifetime Achievement Award 2018 recipient, Narciso Rodriguez
Narciso Rodriguez is widely regarded as one of America’s foremost fashion designers. He made his mark on some of the world’s leading fashion houses before launching his eponymous label in 1997. The recipient of many accolades including three-time winner of the CFDA Award, Rodriguez has also been named one of the “25 Most Influential Hispanics in America” by Time Magazine. GEOFFREY BEENE Lifetime Achievement Award 2015 recipient, Betsey Johnson
The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award was presented by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) to cartwheeling Betsey Johnson, 72, which ended it with a split and losing a shoe. Johnson called over her friend and presenter Kelly Osbourne, to help her up off the floor so she could give her speech. In an accompanying video which told the story of her career, Johnson spoke of learning to design clothes to fit her own body, a normal body in other words, and how she realized that if she stuck to designing what she loved, her customers would stay with her.

GEOFFREY BEENE DESIGN SCHOLARSHIPS
A $5 million pledge from the Geoffrey Beene Foundation in 2007 greatly expanded the CFDA’s core scholarship program by $2.5 million. This generous donation significantly increased existing CFDA educational grants, and funded the establishment of a merit-based $25,000 GEOFFREY BEENE DESIGN SCHOLAR AWARD – to identify the most exemplary, innovative women’s wear design student, based on specific guidelines. A specialized teaching curriculum created for the GEOFFREY BEENE DESIGN SCHOLAR AWARD challenges students to look beyond conforming to trends and business restraints in order to advance the art form. Only the top two (2) junior students from each of the participating schools are invited to submit a portfolio for consideration. This competitive award is based solely on merit as judged by a prestigious panel of industry experts.
