Shipley Do-Nuts, the Texas-based doughnut maker, opened its third Colorado Springs-area store in late December at 4296 N. Academy Blvd. in the Springs, north of Academy and Austin Bluffs Parkway. Shipley plans a grand opening Saturday and Sunday for the new location.

Another Texas import that expanded to the Pikes Peak region in recent years is growing again.

Shipley Do-Nuts debuted its third Colorado Springs-area store last month at 4296 N. Academy Blvd., north of Academy and Austin Bluffs Parkway. Shipley took over a vacant space in a multitenant retail building that had been occupied by a Scooter's Coffee shop.

A grand opening for the new Shipley Do-Nuts is set for this weekend. On Saturday, the first 100 customers will receive a free glazed doughnut; on Sunday, the first 100 customers will receive a free Shipley tote bag. Other customer events are planned during the weekend, while craft beverages at the location are available for $1.99 through Jan. 31.

Shipley Do-Nuts, the Texas-based doughnut maker, opened its third Colorado Springs-area store in December at 4296 N. Academy Blvd. in the Springs, north of Academy and Austin Bluffs Parkway. Shipley plans a grand opening event Saturday and Sunday for the location.

Shipley, founded in 1936 in Houston, is known for its signature plain glazed doughnuts that come in a hexagon shape. Its menu offers more than 60 varieties of doughnuts, along with kolaches, cinnamon rolls, bear claws and coffee.

The new Shipley location on North Academy Boulevard is the third in the Colorado Springs area, and has about 1,900 square feet, indoor seating for four and a drive-thru, according to Utah-based Meisternuts, a Shipley franchisee that operates the chain's three Springs-area stores. The first Shipley opened in late 2019 in Fountain, south of the Springs, and a second opened on Colorado Springs' far north side in October 2023.

"We love the community of Colorado Springs as the influx of new (residents) is growing and we believe it's the place to be," Bob Long, Meisternuts' regional director for Colorado, said via email.

The franchisee plans 15 additional Shipley locations in Colorado Springs and metro Denver, according to a news release. A site for the next Springs-area store still is being evaluated, Long said.

Colorado Springs, like other cities, has plenty of competition among doughnut makers. Regional and national brands include Krispy Kreme, Dunkin' and Hurts Donut Co., while Amy’s Donuts, the Donut Mill and Horseshoe Donuts are among local operators. Safeway, King Soopers and Walmart also sell doughnuts as part of their grocery bakery departments.

But Meisternuts welcomes competition for its Shipley stores, Long said in his email.

"Competition is always plenty here," he said. "We all know how it can also make us change for the better and flow with what Colorado Springs wants in their local (doughnut) kolache shop. As our brand gets more familiar in name with our local (residents), businesses, military and visitors, we hope to create the place to go for fantastic (doughnuts) and kolaches."

Other Texas brands that have become familiar in the Pikes Peak region include Whataburger, which now has seven Springs-area restaurants since arriving in 2022. Torchy's Tacos, another Texas-based chain, has two area locations.

Buc-ee's, the Texas-based supersized convenience store and gas station, also is seeking to bring a location to Palmer Lake in northern El Paso County.
