29 years ago - press release announcing JavaScript! https://lnkd.in/eHCyiwx2 -------------- How it started: --------------- ☕ 1995: JavaScript, built in 10 days by Brendan Eich, was meant for simple browser interactions. 📜 A humble language mocked as a “toy,” meant for enhancing web pages with basic scripts. --------------- How it’s going: --------------- 🚀 2024: JavaScript is everywhere — web, servers, mobile, and even the desktop! 🌍 97% of websites run on JavaScript. 💻 Revolutionized backend development with Node.js. 📱 The foundation of modern apps through React, Angular, and Vue.js. 🖥️ With Electron.js, JavaScript now powers desktop applications like Slack, VS Code, and Discord — bridging the gap between web and desktop. 🌟 Its influence reshaped the landscape, inspiring other scripting languages. #JavaScript #WebDevelopment #DesktopApps #TechInnovation

Hey recruitiers / hiring managers... adding this kind of info to your posts sure would be swell for everyone involved since "engineering manager" and "software manager" mean such different things in different organizations. Even with descriptions and required skills this info clarifies what matters and how much. A job requires Java for example. If you say technical is 5 stars someone that isn't strong in code isn't (or shouldn't) apply. If you say technical is 1 star, someone that wants to stay in code while managing isn't going to apply. And importantly for both visa versa. More context can only help you be more likely to get candidates that match your expectations. Take a look at the 5 different types of Engineering Manager and then specify it and mention the blog (no clue who the blog poster is btw, no affiliation) or use the idea of the different areas to stress. eg: The Delivery Engineering Manager Technical 🌟 Team 🌟🌟 Process 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Product 🌟 https://lnkd.in/eSj2i9yj

The more I work on the release, the more I wonder: Is this a Major or Minor upgrade 🤔? Another way to mark a release on the web is by using a calendar date or CalVer (https://calver.org/). This method looks easy and removes the guessing game for Major vs. Minor. You pick the format and follow it.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet has been my main driver for Cursor in the last few months and last night it seemed like it just got BETTER. Then I saw this today, indeed it was upgraded in coding in particular! But more exciting is this: > Available today on the API, developers can direct Claude to use computers the way people do—by looking at a screen, moving a cursor, clicking buttons, and typing text 🫠 https://lnkd.in/grGXiyev

I'm sorry about this, but GitLab might not matter as much as you think. 🤔 I keep having those kinds of discussions with (French) engineers, so I decided to write about it: no, GitLab is not as prominent as you think it is. We see it as so small that over the last five years, we have made no effort to support it at Mergify, preferring to continue developing new products without GitLab support as a first priority. Read below if you want to understand more. ⬇️

🎉 I'm super excited to be presenting at apidays in Paris on December 3-4-5 on the brand new JSON Schema conference track: https://lnkd.in/dMtc6ing. 📚 I'll be talking about my learnings working with organisations that successfully maintain large repositories of schemas (>1000), and the common patterns I discovered. The idea is to discuss the benefits of applying software engineering principles to schemas and treat them as you would treat the rest of your code. 🤓 Expect to learn lots of practical tips, and demos of tools you can use to enhance your experience working with schemas, including my brand new JSON Schema CLI (https://lnkd.in/dBXKVm_r). All of it very applicable when working with JSON Schema in the context of API specifications like OpenAPI Initiative, and AsyncAPI Initiative. Hope to see you there! If you are going too, reach out, and huge kudos to Edward Rossa for making this happen!

How do you decide which Chaos Engineering tool is right for your organization? Our SRE, {{linkedin_mention(urn:li:person:2OknNYI4LA|Antoine Choimet)}}, shares his perspective on what to look for: ✔️ Wide coverage of chaos attacks ✔️ Support for cloud and non-cloud environments ✔️ Nice UX for creating experiments ✔️ An API to enable experiment automation ✔️ A pricing model that makes sense for your company ✔️ The ability to extend the tool to create custom attacks With the right tool, it's easier to roll out chaos engineering across teams.

Many SREs advocate for increased developer self-service to avoid becoming a bottleneck and to free up time for deeper, more impactful work. At SREday, Sébastien Blanc: - explored various approaches to enabling developer self-service - examined the broader role of portals in the daily operations of SREs Watch the full session on YouTube 💻 - link in the comments!

The relationship with Tech Leads and Engineering Managers is often unclear. Last week, I wrote that The Manager's Path by Camille Fournier missed the opportunity to clarify the relationship and the split of responsibilities between these two key figures in modern Software Engineering teams. While waiting for a second edition of the book, I put together an article aimed at clarifying an area that is often muddy and fuzzy and causes unnecessary friction. In it, I suggest a simple model that goes as follows: * The engineering manager is accountable for all technical decisions made by the team. * The Engineering Manager and Tech Lead are responsible for making these decisions. The split of responsibilities and what is being delegated to the Tech Lead should result from explicit agreements between the two parties. It should prevent the EM from giving up their part of responsibilities altogether. It will reduce the risks of having a single point of failure in the team and the manager stagnating technically. You will find the whole article in the first comment. Happy read! #EngineeringManager #TechLead #CTO #EngineeringLeadership

omg. here is the recording of the last part of my six-hour live coding session (on twitch) of a forecasting app using python and fasthtml. the last 30 minutes. what we achieved in just 30 minutes? - adding the forecasts by Nixtla's timegpt (just 15 minutes🤯😎) - deploy the app using Modal. enjoy the final chapter 💙: ch 4: git commit -m "feat: deploy" (recap at the beginning) (was the commit actually used? 🤔) (if yes, can you find it in the repo's commit history? in the video?) Qxf2 Services
Looking for a lighter alternative to Docker for your virtualized QA services? Discover how to build a custom microVM using Firecracker with our latest blog post! 🚀 At Qxf2, our top-tier technical testers, like the author shivahari p, are constantly looking for ways to streamline and enhance testing processes. Very few testers develop virtualized services to test deeper. But Qxf2 testers go even further, optimizing what’s already considered cutting-edge by many testers. This guide walks you through adding a simple Flask app to your microVM, perfect for those already familiar with Firecracker's basics. 🔗 Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/d-ynCpiq #microvm #testing #qa #firecracker #docker #virtualizedservice

Unpopular thought: for all those who also build cron+LLM systems, also know as "Agentic AI" systems or agent swarms ;)... Spend your first decent number of cycles on building API documenting agents, service discovery agent, authorisation assitant and TDD-fanatic agent who is going to verify those other first few agents coming after. This early investment will pay off at a later phase as a giant velocity boost and your biological agents, aka Engineers, would thank you too! *sigh* You think your API docs and SDKs are cool and totally clear? Send an LLM of your choice over it and ask that question again ;) The amount of "oh, looks like this API I try to call is not working for this totally reasonable but non existed parameter I pass to it. Let me just hallucinate a best looking answer" is just astonishing. Drawing to my Erlang past, the only way this whole buzz can work out is having a LLM agent be treated like an Erlang process, not even a service. Spawn them at will, let them crash and recover quickly. #AgentSwarms
