You wanna know how startup funding is going on right now in Belgium 🇧🇪 ? 🔮 I shared with Maxime SAMAIN (L'Echo) my point of view on that matter. 🦄 < >🐌 Article here: https://lnkd.in/e9qbCKKX Discover my take on the situation in 4 points: 1️⃣ More experienced 🐼 Belgium's startup scene boomed around 2015. These early-stage investors, the Business Angels, have gained experience through their investments made between 2015 and 2020. This newfound expertise makes them more rigorous in their analysis and more demanding of startups, ultimately limiting funding for a select few. 2️⃣ Investment shift ↩ The 2022 inflation surge reshaped investor mindsets and expectations. This trend solidified in 2023, becoming the "new normal." Consequently, 2024 witnessed a significant decline in funding for startups lacking a clear path to profitability. 3️⃣ Cycle ♻ The pre-pandemic boom in startups (around 2020) is now experiencing its first wave of bankruptcies. This has understandably shaken some Business Angels' confidence. While this cycle is natural, fear currently dominates investment decisions for many. 4️⃣ Post trauma 🤕 We are in a “post trauma” period. Very interesting data points about the startup ecosystem in this article. France has has made serious efforts to push its startups over the recent year, when the previous UK government and the current one make serious effort to undermine the whole small business ecosystem, including startups. So is France's effort vanity or does it pay back? Well, the article points out at a record of 129 startups that have failed in the last 18 months. So at first glimpse that does not sound glorious. The reasons for the high rate of failures are the difficult environment/ lack of funding but also bad spending strategy/ recruitment. So all good material here for the advocates of let's not bother with startups they are a waste of time and money, right? Not quite so for 3 key reasons: 1) If anything this shows startups need more support, not only in financial terms but also to help them to spend their cash on what matters for their development, reinforce their vision and recruit accordingly. That is precisely what we do at Value Squared with our partners, especially on the recruitment/ talent strategy side with Sarah Shields from Thrive. So one way to look at it is that startups need more funds to get more professional support, if of course founders are open to it...but investors have a word to say there! 2) Even more revealing the article tells us that despite this record level of failures, of which not all the fault is to be imputed to founders, there has also been a strong growth of accumulated revenues from startups in France, with an increase of 18.3% in 2023. So one can only imagine what this growth would have been if startups had received the right support... 3) One should also stressed out that the money spent on the 129 startups that shut down is not "lost" for the French economy, for most it has been spent in France and during the time those companies worked people who were employed by them were paid, learned and were not unemployed... Are French unicorns ready for their IPO? I'll say yes, and probably even a bit better than German startups! Let me tell you why. Most IPOs are driven by the CEO / CFO couple but there is a third important wheel to this constellation: the CMO! A big part of a successful IPO and then stock exchange valuation is communication. It's all about trust, baby! And trust is built through communication & thought leadership. French startups are often very strong in being transparent and proactive in their communications. So this is a solid basis to work on. Here are my learnings from working on KATEK GROUP's IPO: ‣ It's not all about the press: Yes, mandatory investor relations (IR) news have to be communicated through the press. By going further and also using your company's owned channels you show even more transparency to your stakeholders. Communicating on LinkedIn will enable dialog with your investors. ‣ IR does not need to be boring: Financial reports might not sound as sexy as the next big brand campaign, but it can be. Use videos to explain the numbers further, plan live Q&A sessions with the CEO. Be creative and stay true to your brand's values. ‣ It's about the people: The stock exchange market is a numbers and money world. By involving your C-level in the communication you will be able to build up a stronger trust in your company. In people we trust! "What's new in healthcare innovation globally?" I had the pleasure to share my thoughts on this topic at the annual event in Paris hosted by La Poste Santé & Autonomie, which brought together the entire French #healthcare and #healthTech ecosystem. François BRAUN: Former Minister of Social Affairs and Health of #France . stephane pierrefitte: Deputy General Director at the University Hospital Group (Psychiatry & Neurosciences) . Hélène GUIMIOT: Head of the Health Service in the Legal Support Department of the French data protection authority (CNIL) . Kathy Malas: Director of Research, Innovation, and Learning at CISSS Montérégie-Ouest, Quebec. The key points of my presentations in a nutshell: The NHS, a cornerstone of British pride, is in crisis according to Lord Darzi's 2024 report (published in Sep 24) Key findings show 33% of Britons now wait over a week for GP appointments, compared to 16% in 2021. Bupa has responded by offering a subscription model for primary care: £17/month for same-day teleconsultations or £22/month for in-person visits, raising concerns about a potential two-tier system. Following the publication of the report, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer aims to transition the NHS to a digital system. There are already promising initiatives within the NHS like the 42 Integrated Care Systems (ICS) and the GP Practice Improvement Program, which has replaced 30% of face-to-face visits with text consultations. AI could also play a crucial role, with most NHS staff supporting its use in patient care (76%) and administration (81%). Four key #AI archetypes include: 1️⃣ Non-clinical AI for consumers/patients AI-based care navigation, seen with US companies like Transcarent or UnitedHealth Group's Find Care & Costs tool. 2️⃣ Clinical AI for consumers/patients AI predictive models intercepting disease through blood analysis (e.g., Function Health, Aware) or imaging (e.g., Neko Health). 3️⃣ Clinical AI for health professionals AI Clinical Decision Support (AI-CDS), especially in radiology (75% of FDA approved AI-CDS), but also beyond with companies like Tempus AI in AI-oncology. 4️⃣ Non-clinical AI for healthcare professionals AI-enhanced administrative management (like Ambient AI, ...), likely to see the fastest adoption in the short term. Three potential winners in the AI healthcare transformation: Epic: Aiming to orchestrate AI in hospitals with its App Store Showroom. Mayo Clinic: Already using 70+ AI algorithms and developing the Mayo Clinic Platform_Connect, a data hub connecting major hospitals for AI model training. La Poste Santé & Autonomie: An innovative public player acting as a trusted intermediary between healthcare systems, industry, and regulators to implement new models of care.

Who's the French top Business Angel? The State! It’s a trend quite widespread in France. After a few years working for a company, many left to freelance or launch a startup, supported by "rupture conventionnelle", i.e. an amicable agreement between employer and employee that lets employees leave a company and still benefit from unemployment allowances. Daphné Leprince-Ringuet on Sifted rightly wonders if this was a case of France’s ‘startup nation’ plugging into the country’s unemployment benefits scheme as a means to get businesses started. That might be a smart move. Based on France’s "chômage" (unemployment benefits scheme) job seekers can expect, on average, to receive about two-thirds of their previous salary for up to 18 months. Until last year, when the government reduced the duration of the scheme, allowances could stretch up to two years. Job seekers who want to start a company in France can either get monthly payments or ask to receive 60% of their total allowance in two separate lump sums, which are typically used to inject capital into a business. It means that founders-to-be often get both the time and the money to get their startup rolling. “Out of the non-representative sample of my 50 founder friends… absolutely everyone knows about it,” says Fabien Cazes, who founded insurtech Neat while au chômage, after leaving his job as a general manager at a startup in 2021. “Being an entrepreneur also means being smart. If you miss this kind of support, it’s not a great start.” Around a third of companies created in France in 2021 were supported by unemployment allowances. A poll carried out by startup incubator EuraTechnologies among 200 early-stage startups found that 80% of its founders were on benefits. BUT a few questions popped up to my (and not only mine) mind: - those most likely to take advantage of unemployment benefits to launch a company are population groups that can afford to take more risks — not those (like women or people from the working classes) who tend to be more precarious (as Euratechnologies’ chair Koussée Vaneecke points out). - the French government was planning to reduce the length of the benefits scheme from 18 to 15 months. To be reassessed what the new government will decide to do. - what is the cost for companies? This is actually a real question since I assume that part of the subsidies are on the companies' books. If so, France might be trading off startup creation with startup competitiveness. It is worth to be explored Daphné (plus experts/friends such as Luigi LENGUITO, Fausto Boni, Nicolas Brien , Axelle Lemaire...). #france #startups #government Mind the Bridge
