I don't share samples of my writing.
Just a moment ago, I had a very nice person Fiverr explain to me how "absurd" it is to say, "I'm a writer. Hire me," but not share any samples.
Here's my reply. I hope it helps others understand why I don't believe that writing samples are a wise business decision.
"I appreciate your feedback. Because you were kind enough to write out an explanation and help guide me, let me explain why I've been doing this for over a decade.
"Firstly, I don't own the work; my clients do. To use it for myself is, technically, stealing. It's their work product. I don't ask permission to use it.
"Secondly, since so many of my clients are individuals, not companies, they don't want anyone knowing they didn't write their own posts. It's often written in the first person where I have created an online voice for them.
"Thirdly, and more importantly, since everything is written for someone else in their voice, samples are usually a way to simply exclude someone. "That doesn't sound like me, so I can't hire you." In reality, I change how I write for each client. Some want upbeat and fun, others want staid and professional, still others want short, staccato posts. Since it changes with each client, particularly stylistically, it's more likely to not sound like you than to seem like what you want.
"I respect your desire for samples. I fully understand it. That said, I literally have none to share.
"Given Fiverr's very liberal cancellation policies, you also have nothing to lose on this platform hiring me or anyone else.
"Thanks again for taking the time to share your perspective. I appreciate it.
"Yours,
"Bob"
The question of "can I do the mechanics of writing in English?" is answered in my responses. From there, as a generalist, I don't really have my own style.
Let me know your thoughts.
