As part of our community development and livelihood initiatives, our local partner in Pemba, Zanzibar, the Kwanini Foundation, continues to innovate with projects that drive environmental and social impact. 🌍 ♻️ The Foundation’s Eco-VSL groups are carrying out village clean-ups with a creative twist — turning plastic waste into bottle benches. While many organisations focus on clean-ups, the big question is often, "What do we do with the trash?" Bottle benches offer a practical solution to this issue. These benches are attracting the attention of community members and visitors alike, sparking conversations and helping spread eco-friendly ideas like this to other areas. The bench in the photos is made from an impressive 647 bottles, weighing around 300 kilos of plastic waste! Add another 10-15 kilos from the clean-up, and you’ve got a powerful example of how waste can be transformed into something useful for the community. Blue Alliance and Kwanini Foundation are committed to promoting eco-friendly practices to establish sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities and helping to reduce illegal and unsustainable fishing practices. ➡️ Learn more about our community development programmes in Pemba, Zanzibar: https://bit.ly/48W16Uy #EcoBricks #PlasticRecycling #BlueAlliance #KwaniniFoundation #ZeroWaste #CommunityDevelopment #Pemba #Zanzibar

À propos
We work with governments and partners to build and manage Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Philippines, Indonesia, Zanzibar, and Belize that regenerate coral reef ecosystems and improve the lives of local communities. We are regenerating 1,280,000 ha of high-biodiversity coral reefs, protecting over 70 threatened species and improving the livelihoods of more than 20,000 people in coastal communities. Our four fundamental and interrelated fields of operation: - Science and Conservation - Community Development - Compliance - Sustainable Revenues Every Blue Alliance MPA is designed and managed to rewild ecosystems, improve food security, promote sustainable Blue Economy development for local communities, and enhance climate change resilience. Our experience has shown us that these goals are entirely compatible and achievable to create a successful MPA. We bridge the marine conservation financing gap through innovative, Blue Economy reef-positive businesses in and around the MPAs, collaborating with key partners and working with local communities. Our priority sectors include ecotourism, blue carbon projects, community-based aquaculture, and plastic recycling. We believe that our MPAs can become financially self-sustainable and independent from donors in the long term. Together we are helping the planet, one Marine Protected Area at a time.

🌊 Protecting coral reefs while supporting local communities is possible! 🚀 With the launch of the Blue Finance impact loan facility for Marine Protected Areas, in partnership with Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas, we are creating a #sustainable model that links marine conservation with responsible economic development. 💼 This initiative supports reef-positive businesses in the blue economy, focusing on coral reef protection and community livelihoods. 🔗 Unfortunately, 70% of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) lack the funding for effective management. Structured and financed by BNP Paribas' impact investment team, in collaboration with the CSR department and BNP Paribas Asset Management, the Blue Finance facility seeks to fill this funding gap. It attracts #investors to support reef-positive businesses combining ecosystem protection with productive economic activities for local communities. These initiatives include responsible ecotourism, community-based aquaculture, blue carbon credits, and sustainable fisheries. Importantly, revenues from these businesses are reinvested into the MPAs managed by Blue Alliance and local communities are included in participatory management. 🌍 With initial funding from BNP Paribas, the facility will first operate in Indonesia, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Cabo Verde, protecting 1.8 million hectares of coral reefs and improving the livelihoods of 110,000 local community members. By supporting Blue Alliance in expanding MPA, we are amplifying their positive impact on coral reefs and fostering sustainable development for local communities. 🌱 BNP Paribas' first marine-focused impact performance loan is a crucial step in our commitment to #ocean protection and preservation, and a just ecological transition. Through catalytic grant funding and support from the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas established a blended finance facility that is contributing to effectively protect, manage, and monitor networks of MPAs. The financing facility is positioned to scale up reef-positive businesses, which contribute financially to the MPA management through dividends and/or revenue sharing, allowing to cover operational costs such as ranger salaries, conservation activities, livelihood development, scientific monitoring and research, and empowerment of women on the frontlines of climate change. Now fully operationalised, the facility is attracting capital from private investors including BNP Paribas and UBS Optimus Foundation. The vehicle is already supporting the work of female rangers in Pemba, on the frontlines of marine ecosystem protection. Their important work helps thwart key local threats affecting reefs that sustain their community, while also challenging societal norms and inspiring more local women to join conservation efforts. In this new article, explore how Asha Juma Khamis and Asha Bakar Mtwana patrol the coast and waters of the Northern Pemba Channel Conservation Area (PECCA), home to 50% of Tanzania’s coral reefs. #SDG14 #ForCoral #CoralReefs

ANNOUNCEMENT 📢 We are excited to launch ‘Blue Finance’, the first impact loan facility for coral reef conservation in partnership with BNP Paribas. This innovative facility will support reef-positive businesses in the Blue Economy that protect vital coral reef ecosystems, uplift coastal communities, and generate revenue for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). 🌊 Coral reefs are crucial for marine biodiversity and provide food, coastal protection, and income for over 500 million people worldwide, yet they are under threat. Well-managed MPAs can reverse this decline, but 70% of them lack the funding they need for effective management. Our ‘Blue Finance’ impact loan facility addresses this challenge by providing early-stage capital to innovative businesses that reduce drivers of coral reef degradation, improve food security, alleviate poverty in vulnerable communities, and contribute financially to MPA management. Sectors include community-based aquaculture, ecotourism, sustainable fisheries, and blue carbon projects. 🤝 We are grateful to BNP Paribas for providing the initial funding, as well as trusted partners, including Global Fund for Coral Reefs, Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance, and UBS Optimus Foundation, for their support in designing the overall framework of the facility. Together, we are protecting vital marine ecosystems, supporting local communities, and building a thriving Blue Economy. ➡️ Learn more about the groundbreaking impact loan facility for marine conservation and the partnership with BNP Paribas: https://bit.ly/3Ngxc4s United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), IUCN, Simmons & Simmons, Ropes & Gray LLP, Addleshaw Goddard, Blue Alliance Philippines #BNCFF #ImpactLoanFacility #BlueFinance #MarineConservation #MPA #SocialEnterprise #BlueEconomy #ImpactInvesting

Our Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Banggai, Indonesia, are home to incredible marine biodiversity, supporting countless species and local communities. 🌊 However, illegal and unsustainable fishing practices, such as compressor fishing and hunting blacktip sharks, endanger marine life and jeopardise the livelihoods of local fishers who rely on healthy marine ecosystems. 🤝 Collaboration is essential to protecting the Banggai Conservation Area. In partnership with PSDKP Central Sulawesi Province, our local entity Blue Alliance Banggai, Tompotika Foundation, and community rangers (POKMASWAS), we are working relentlessly to safeguard the Banggai MPAs. Through regular joint patrols, awareness and education initiatives, and effective enforcement, we are building a healthier, more productive marine ecosystem. ➡️ Learn more about our work in Banggai, Indonesia: https://lnkd.in/gSiJx9Sj #Banggai #Indonesia #MPA #PSDKP #MarineConservation #ForCoral #IllegalFishing #SustainableFishing #BlueEconomy

🌊 Women are protecting our ocean’s ecosystems in Zanzibar 🌊 Empowered women around the world stand at the forefront of marine conservation, and in this case, are protecting the vibrant coastal and ocean ecosystems that sustain their communities. Along the coastline and in the waters off Pemba, Zanzibar, Asha Juma Khamis and Asha Bakar Mtwana are amongst the marine rangers that work with Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas and patrol the North Pemba Channel Conservation Area. Each day, they embark on boat patrols to remove illegal fishing nets and educate local fishers on sustainable practices. Back on land, they walk the beaches and mangrove forests, teaching fishers about the importance of only catching fish and octopus of the right size, so as to avoid depleting stocks. They protect and restore iconic species too: the Blue Alliance rangers monitor Crown of Thorns Starfish (CoTS), protect sea turtle nests, and raise public awareness so that more people join our movement. Their dedication to their work in advocating for responsible practices, restoring wild species and crucial habitats and empowering their communities, is admirable. This is the power of local leadership in our global #rewilding movement! 🌍💙 #OceanWeek2024 #MarineConservation #WomenInConservation #Ocean #Zanzibar #ClimateAction https://lnkd.in/dCwMhPDA Credits: Images: Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas Music: Vicky Kamata - Tanzanite Lady
