Cyprus Minister Highlights Energy Strategies at Conference

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry George Papanastasiou addressed participants at the Energy Storage and Hydrogen Solutions Conference, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to green energy transition amid global challenges.

Papanastasiou highlighted Cyprus’ unique energy issues, including reliance on imported fossil fuels and lack of interconnections with Europe, while praising recent progress in renewable energy deployment.

The minister outlined key strategies, including regulatory reforms and €40 million in funding for storage systems under EU-backed programs.

Cyprus plans to integrate 150 MW of hybrid storage capacity alongside renewable projects. On hydrogen solutions, the minister announced a public consultation on the National Hydrogen Strategy, exploring hydrogen’s role in transport and renewable markets despite challenges like water scarcity and infrastructure needs.

Papanastasiou urged stakeholders to collaborate on energy innovations, positioning Cyprus as a green energy hub in the Mediterranean.

He reaffirmed the importance of balancing decarbonization costs with energy access and security during the transition.
