Historic Trade Surprise: Cyprus’ Incredible 1958 Global Export of Oranges

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – More than 1,100 tons of oranges were exported from Cyprus during early March 1958, as stated in a report from the Director of Commerce and Industry.

Cyprus produce reached destinations all over the world, from the United States to Russia.

Britain, Germany, and Malaya imported oranges and lemons.

Russia took 447 tons of scalded raisins.

Raisins were also exported to West Germany, France, and Ceylon.

Additionally, 97 tons of canned products, mainly to the U.K.; 29 tons of haricot beans to Lebanon; 23 tons of grape juice to the U.K.; and 16 tons of skins to Yugoslavia were exported.

Fifteen tons of cumin seed were sent to the Union of South Africa and Britain, 13 tons of yellow leaf tobacco to Hong Kong, and four tons of dried herbs to the U.K. and Australia.

Three tons of sumac leaves were exported to Holland, two tons of fumigated tobacco leaves to Finland and Hong Kong, and smaller quantities of sage leaves to the U.K., unshelled almonds to Mauritius, and halloumi, wines, and spirits to the U.S.A.
