Watch the Umbrella Academy land in '60s Texas in season 2 opening scene

It’s out of the frying pan and into the fire for the Umbrella Academy. In the final moments of season 1 of the Netflix superhero series, we saw the Hargreeves siblings — Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castaneda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), the ghost of Ben (Justin H. Min), and Vanya (Ellen Page) — fail to stop the apocalypse. They did escape the destruction to fight another day, at least, thanks to Five’s time travel powers. Now that Netflix has released the opening scene online ahead of The Umbrella Academy season 2 premiere this week, we see for the first time how chaotic this trip to the past is going to be.

Five has gained more control over his powers since he first ran away from home as a kid and ended up trapped in a post-apocalyptic wasteland for decades...but he’s still not perfect with them. As a result, the Umbrella Academy doesn’t all land in ‘60s Dallas at the same time. Klaus and Ben arrive first, smack dab in 1960. Klaus’ first reaction is fashion-related astonishment: “Are hats back?” But when Ben points out the date on a nearby magazine, they both realize they have bigger problems than that.

Allison arrives next, in 1961. Still lacking her voice after that climactic confrontation with Vanya, she’s further unbalanced by landing in the Jim Crow South with its “whites only” signs. Luther materializes third, in 1962. He screams out for all his lost siblings, but especially for Allison — so much so that a nearby vagrant even joins in. Sometimes it’s just fun to yell a woman’s name in the rain! Diego lands in September 1963, and in characteristic fashion is one of the few to land on his feet like a cat rather than crashing headfirst into a dumpster. He is immediately entranced by a TV showing a speech from President John F. Kennedy, whose historical assassination is only a couple months away at that point. Vanya arrives a month later, in October ‘63, looking quite cool in her white suit until he’s immediately hit by a car. Luckily for her that car is driven by Sissy (Marin Ireland), a mother and housewife who makes up for the car accident with hospitality and kindness. Sissy is not the only onlooker who gets drawn into the Umbrella Academy's orbit; keep an eye on that guy taking pictures of each of them as they land.

The last to land is the time traveler himself, Number Five. He arrives on Nov. 25, 1963, three days after the JFK assassination and three years after the first of his siblings entered the past. We immediately see what they’ve wrought in that time: A whole new apocalypse! This one has a Cold War flavor, with Soviet troops waving red flags as they pour down Texas streets. It looks like they're winning the street battle against American forces until the Umbrella Academy interferes. But not even the combined strength of the Hargreeves can overcome nukes.

Thanks to a cameo appearance from our old friend Hazel (Cameron Britton), Five once again receives a timey-wimey get-out-of-jail-free card, to see if he can unite the team before they bring about another apocalypse decades ahead of schedule. As Maxine Nightingale sings in the season's first great soundtrack moment here, the Hargreeves siblings are "right back where we started from": Separated, and with only a short time frame to reunite before Ragnarok.
