Bowen Yang says 'Trend Forecasters' likely won't return unless Aidy Bryant comes back to host SNL

Our first category: Entertainment trends. In: watching an all-guy four-gy in the trailer of a major Hollywood movie. In: shooshing people at the theater for talking over the previews. In: Peacock as a legitimate streaming service. And out: Saturday Night Live's "Trend Forecasters."

Bowen Yang, Aidy Bryant, and their writing partner Celeste Yim gave us one of the best recurring bits on the late-night sketch comedy series, but after only a few segments, last weekend was the last time we'll see it — at least for now.

Bryant was one of the major SNL players who left the show with the season 47 finale last Saturday, and Yang tells EW he has no plans to continue "Trend Forecasters" without her.

"Honestly, I would never dream of doing it without Aidy," Yang says on the press tour for his upcoming movie, Fire Island. "So, I feel like the next time we do it is when Aidy comes back to host. And I feel like that day will be much sooner than we think, or I hope it's much sooner than I think because she is just going to be everyone's boss at some point in show business. So, I feel like she'll have her moment to come back, hopefully, and that maybe, if everything aligns correctly, we'll do it again."

Yang and Bryant made their debut as "two trend forecasters" on SNL's "Weekend Update" in January and were an instant hit. Like two fashion-world tycoons from Zoolander, this intense duo with harsh hair parts read Michael Che "The Report," their list of everything that's in and out at the moment, from "baby trends" to "men trends" to "summer fruit trends."

But when something was "out," they faced the camera to ferociously "evict it to hell" and tell that thing to "go to bed, b----!"

Yang explains the origin of this sketch. "It was one of those Tuesdays where the wells were dry for all of us, between me and Aidy and Celeste," he says. "We had written it for Willem Dafoe, actually, as a sketch where Aidy and I were the trend people who were talking about what was in, and then we would cut to a single of Willem Dafoe with dire music as he was screaming about what was out. We were like, 'Well, it's Willem Dafoe. He's one of the great screamers in Hollywood.' It had almost gotten picked, but then they told us, 'Can you make it an 'Update' feature?'"

Yang and Bryant performed their last "Trend Forecasters" sketch together on Saturday's finale, hosted by Natasha Lyonne, and Yang paid tribute to his friend and colleague.

"In: 10 nice years," Bryan said on the episode.

"In: a friend I couldn't have done this without," Yang said. The bit ended with Che and Yang kissing and hugging Bryant for her send-off.

Yang tells EW it was a "really surreal, really emotional" episode with so many cast members leaving, including Kate McKinnon, Pete Davidson, and Kyle Mooney.

"I was just thinking today about how each of them has done so much for the show, shaped the show into what it is, into what it's been in the last decade, and it's a huge loss," he says. "I think our emotions were just running high. I really wish them all the best. I think I've made collaborators and friends for life in all of them."
