Chris Rock goes to war with gangsters in Fargo season 4 trailer

As one of the show’s Minnesotan denizens might put it, Fargo season 4 looks like a heck of a doozy.

It’s been almost three years since the FX anthology’s most recent season aired, but from the looks of the season 4 trailer, the show has lost none of its dry wit, visual flair, and ear for Midwestern dialogue in the interim. The action-packed trailer also shows off the season’s stacked cast, including Chris Rock, Jason Schwartzman, Timothy Olyphant, and Ben Whishaw.

The new season, set in 1950 in Kansas City, Missouri (ditching the show’s Minnesota setting for the first time), tells the tale of Loy Cannon (Rock), who leads a crime syndicate made up of black migrants who fled the Jim Crow South. Their uneasy peace with Kansas City’s Italian mafia is shattered when the head of the mafia dies, setting off the flood of violence teased in the trailer. Per FX, the season explores “immigration and assimilation, and the things we do for money.” It appears plenty of drugs, robberies, and car chases will also be involved.

“Italians, they’re the past,” Rock says in the trailer. “We’re the future. They just don’t know it yet.”

“We’re the goddamn Roman Empire,” Schwartzman’s mobster counters, seemingly forgetting the whole “decline and fall” phase of Roman history.

Fargo season 4 is set to premiere April 19 on FX. Check out the full trailer above.
