American Crime Story: Sarah Paulson to star in revamped Katrina installment

Ryan Murphy has just made a massive change to his much-discussed Hurricane Katrina installment of American Crime Story. EW has confirmed the mini-series will now be based on the book Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink which chronicled a New Orleans hospital under siege from the storm and without power for days.

Murphy muse Sarah Paulson will take the lead role as Dr. Anna Pou, one of the hospital’s real life medical professionals, who later was accused of giving patients lethal drugs to expedite their deaths during the disaster.

Scott Rudin will also now executive producer the series along with Murphy, Nina Jacobson, and Brad Simpson.

There had been rumblings that this particular installment was having difficulties coming to fruition. ACS‘ next installment, The Assassination of Gianni Versace, was originally supposed to go after Katrina but then the two swapped. The FX anthology has already cast Annette Bening, Matthew Broderick, and Dennis Quaid in major roles so it’s unclear if they’ll be involved in the new version but Deadline is reporting producers hope to still include the actors.

Katrina 2.0 is reportedly set to shoot next spring.
