The CW's Dynasty reboot from Gossip Girl team greenlit

The Dynasty reboot is officially happening.

The CW has given a series order to its modern-day reimagining of the 1980s soap for next season.

The new version follows two of America’s wealthiest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, as they feud for control over their fortune and their children. The series “will focus on Fallon Carrington (Elizabeth Gillies, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll), the daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington, and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal (Nathalie Kelley, UnReal), a Hispanic woman marrying into this WASP family and America’s most powerful class.”

The show — from executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl) — is a bit of a return to classic form for the network, which initially was best known for its contemporary ensemble soaps like Gossip Girl, 90210, and Melrose Place. The brand then shifted more heavily to supernatural and superhero shows — or soaps-with-a-twist, like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (it’s also a musical) and Riverdale (it’s also a murder mystery). But Dynasty has that glossy back-to-basics CW 2008 feel, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

There are no photos or trailer yet (next week there almost certainly will be), but the pilot also stars Grant Show (Melrose Place), James Mackay (The Leftovers), Alan Dale (The O.C.), Sam Adegoke (Murder in the First), Robert Christopher Riley (Hit the Floor), and Rafael de la Fuente (Empire).

The project is also from executive producers Sallie Patrick (Revenge), Esther and Richard Shapiro (the creators of the original Dynasty), and Brad Silberling (Jane the Virgin).

The CW also greenlit a rather nontraditional series for its brand: Valor, a serialized military drama and conspiracy thriller. Here’s the description: “The boundaries between military discipline and human desire are tested on a U.S. Army base that houses an elite unit of helicopter pilots trained to perform clandestine international and domestic missions. It centers on chopper pilots Nora and Gallo (Matt Barr, Sleepy Hollow) who, after a botched mission in Somalia leaves a pair of American servicemen in enemy hands, train for a rescue operation, and only they share a very large secret from the initial operation — a secret that must never come to the attention of the Army.”
