As iconic as Elton John's music is, his peak didn't quite land in the golden era of music videos. As a result, many of his most famous songs never had a video. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of his artistic partnership with songwriter Bernie Taupin, John teamed up with YouTube to hold a contest to create official videos for "Rocket Man," "Tiny Dancer," and "Benny and the Jets." The TODAY show cast took the challenge and attempted the third one, which debuted on NBC Monday morning.

Each anchor donned a distinctly '70s outfit for their video. Matt Lauer, for instance, wore a long wig and red jacket that made him look like an Almost Famous extra, while Al Roker took on an afro and aviator sunglasses. The cast walked around lip-syncing to "Benny and the Jets" before meeting up on a couch to jam.

"What were we thinking?" Lauer laughed after the video finished.
