Nominations have been announced for the 73rd annual Tony Awards, honoring the best plays, musicals, and performances of the 2018-2019 Broadway season. Hadestown, a musical retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, leads the nominees with 14 in total, followed by Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations with 12, and Tootsie — an adaptation of the 1982 Dustin Hoffman film — with 11. Those three shows are nominated for Best Musical, along with Beetlejuice and The Prom. The nominees for Best Play are Choir Boy, The Ferryman, Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus, Ink, and What the Constitution Means to Me. Broadway veterans Brandon Victor Dixon (Hamilton) and Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago) announced the nominations live on Tuesday morning, and a portion of the categories aired on CBS This Morning. A few other Tony honorees have already been announced: Judith Light will receive this year’s Isabelle Stevenson Award, honoring her advocacy to end HIV/AIDS and her support for LGBTQ+ and human rights, while Tony Awards for lifetime achievement will go to actress Rosemary Harris, playwright Terence McNally, and composer Howard Wheeler. Special Tony Awards will also be bestowed on Sonny Tilders and Creature Technology Company (creators of the titular puppet for King Kong), musical director and arranger Jason Michael Webb, and the late actress Marin Mazzie. The 73rd Tony Awards will be handed out at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 9, in a ceremony hosted by James Corden airing live on CBS.
