Between Angels in America and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, this year’s Tony Awards were dominated by marathon, mammoth-length plays. But there were still plenty of musicals represented on-stage, and thanks to the musical talents of co-hosts Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles, there was still plenty of singing on stage Sunday night.

Groban and Bareilles started things off with a spirit of equanimity, dedicating their opening number to “the people who lose” — and they were fit to convey this message since, despite their respective work on Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 and Waitress, neither host has yet won a Tony. In the hours that followed, every nominated musical got a chance to show off, including Best Musical winner The Band’s Visit and Best Revival of a Musical winner Once On This Island. Summer: The Donna Summer Musical performed its namesake’s hit “Last Dance,” Carousel took the stage for “Blow High, Blow Low,” and Bruce Springsteen (who wasn’t nominated for competitive honors but received a special Tony Award for his Broadway run) performed an oral history-inflected version of his song “My Hometown.” The cast of last year’s Best Musical winner, Dear Evan Hansen, sang an In Memoriam tribute, while students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School sang “Seasons of Love” from Rent.
