Sutton Foster joins Hugh Jackman in Broadway's The Music Man

Sutton Foster is coming back to Broadway.

On Monday, producer Scott Rudin announced that the two-time Tony-winning actress will star as Marian Paroo opposite Hugh Jackman in the upcoming revival of The Music Man.

“There were bells on a hill but I never heard them ringing,” said Foster in a statement, quoting lyrics from the musical’s song “Till There Was You” with an apt alteration. “No, I never heard them at all. Till there was Hugh.”

Jackman shared his excitement with the casting news on Twitter, posting a photo of himself dancing with the Younger actress.

Though Foster has been on a hiatus from the theater world in recent years, she is nonetheless an extremely accomplished Broadway star, winning her first Tony Award for the lead role in Thoroughly Modern Millie and snagging her second for Anything Goes. She was also nominated for her turns in Little Women, The Drowsy Chaperone, Shrek: The Musical, and Violet.

In The Music Man, Foster will play Marian, a small town librarian who isn’t fooled by the exploits of conman Harold Hill (Jackman) who pretends to be the organizer of a boys’ marching band in a ploy to run off with the the money he collects for instruments and uniforms.

Directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks and with choreography by Tony Award winner Warren Carlyle, the show will begin performances on Sept. 9, 2020 and officially open on Oct. 22, 2020 at a Shubert theater yet to be announced.
