The Rings of Power stars tease working with Ents and Shelob in season 2: 'I got muddy the whole season'

Plus, a new season 2 trailer was released at San Diego Comic-Con.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is designed to fill in blanks in the history of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. But when season 2 launches next month on Amazon Prime Video, viewers will also get to see some fan-favorite inhabitants of Tolkien’s fantasy world.

The new trailer for season 2 reveals that Ents, eagles, and Shelob will all appear in upcoming episodes of The Rings of Power — and it also seems like we haven’t seen the last of that Balrog that showed its face towards the end of season 1.

The trailer was released timed to the show’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, which allowed moderator Yvette Nicole Brown (Community) to ask the cast members directly about it. Arondir (Ismael Cruz Cordoba) and Isildur (Maxim Baldry), for instance, are the characters who will come face-to-face with Ents in season 2.

"I’m super excited that we have Ents in the show," Cordoba said. "I’m not alone, I think, when I say these magical creatures really shaped my childhood years. They were created by Yavanna to protect the trees and the forest…”

Cordoba briefly trailed off, citing both jet lag and the reverie of Tolkien’s mythology, before resuming his train of thought: “It’s a cautionary tale, essentially. They’re there to stop what we are doing today, killing the Earth.”

His costar Baldry put it even simpler: “Who doesn’t love the Ents? If you don’t, you’re just weird.”

The last we saw Isildur, he had been left behind in Middle-earth by his father Elendil (Lloyd Owen) and the rest of the Numenoreans when they went back to their home island. So in addition to Ents, Isildur will also go up against the spider queen herself, Shelob.

“I got muddy the whole season,” Baldry said. “That was the start, and it just got muddier and muddier.”
