EW's editorial guidelines Published on January 13, 2020 07:59AM EST And the nominees are… here! The 2020 Oscar nominations were announced live on Monday morning, a mere week after Ricky Gervais trashed talked Hollywood on the Golden Globes stage. Joker, helmed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of DC Comics, received the highest number of nominations (11 in total), including for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Lead Actor. Avengers: Endgame was the only other comic book-based blockbuster to receive a nomination (Best Visual Effects). Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Sam Mendes’ 1917 tied for the second most nominations with 10 each. Parasite, with a total of six each, received a number of the higher profile nominations: the film earned on for Best Picture and International Feature Film, while Bong Joon Ho received one for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Every year always brings a number of snubs, and Greta Gerwig was a big one. The Little Women director did not get a nod for directing, though she did enter the Best Picture and Screenplay fields. A number of Oscar voters also outed themselves as members of the #PughHive, nominating Florence Pugh for Best Supporting Actress. Jennifer Lopez, one many hoped would enter that playing field for Hustlers, was not nominated. John Cho of Star Trek Beyond and Issa Rae of Insecure revealed contenders for the 24 categories in an event streamed live on various internet platforms. If it feels like a speedy awards season, that’s because it is. As opposed to previous years, all the major honors for film will be dished out in a tight few weeks, finishing with the host-less 92nd annual Oscars ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 9 in Hollywood. The big night for the entertainment industry will be televised live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Here are the nominees.
