Emma Stone suffers wardrobe malfunction winning Best Actress at Oscars: ‘Don’t look at the back of my dress!’

Emma Stone suffered a minor wardrobe malfunction while accepting the award for Best Actress at the 2024 Oscars.

Stone won for her role as Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, and as she stepped on to the stage, she motioned at the zipper on the back of her dress. Presenters Charlize Theron, Michelle Yeoh, Jessica Lange, Sally Field, and Jennifer Lawrence rushed to help her as she told the audience, “My dress is broken!”

Stone joked that she probably ripped it while singing along to Ryan Gosling’s musical performance earlier in the show. “I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken,’” she explained. “I’m pretty sure.”

The 35-year-old actress beat out fellow nominees Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall, Annette Bening for Nyad, Carey Mulligan for Maestro, and Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon. In her speech, Stone paid tribute to her fellow nominees, telling them, “I’m in awe of you. It has been such an honor to do all this together. I hope we get to do more together.”

Stone closed out her speech by thanking Lanthimos and all of her Poor Things costars and crew, visibly emotional.

“The other night, I was panicking — as you can kind of see, that happens a lot — that maybe something like this could happen,” Stone explained. “Yorgos said to me, ‘Please take yourself out of it.’ Because he’s right: It’s not about me. It’s about a team that came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts. That is the best part about making movies: It’s all of us together. I am so deeply honored to share this with every cast member, with every crew member, with every single person who poured their love and their care and their brilliance into the making of this film.”

Then, as turned to step off the stage, Stone said, “Don’t look at the back of my dress!”

Speaking to reporters backstage after her win, Stone reiterated that she probably popped a zipper while singing along with her La La Land costar Gosling.

"They sewed me back in right when I came back, which was wonderful," Stone explained. "I really do think I busted it during 'I'm Just Ken.' I was so amazed by Ryan and what he was doing, and that number just blew my mind. He was right there, and I just was going for it, and you know, things happen!"
