Take a vacation with a sneak peek at Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar

At a time when most of us have been cloistered in our homes for nearly a year, there's something undeniably appealing about the idea of a taking a trip to somewhere — anywhere — else. That wanderlust is at the heart of Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, a quirky comedy featuring Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo as two Midwestern BFFs who head south to sunnier shores.

"I wanted this movie to feel like a vacation for people visually," director Josh Greenbaum tells EW. "It feels like the trip we all are desperate to go on right now."

Ahead of the film's digital release on Feb. 12, EW has an exclusive look at an early scene from Barb and Star. In the clip above, the titular pair gather at home with friends (played by Vanessa Bayer, Rose Abdoo, Phyllis Smith, and Fortune Feimster) for a meeting of their regular "talking club," swapping stories over a bowl of Barb and Star's signature "hot dog soup." And below is a teaser of the club meeting over Zoom, where they opine about everything from horses and bananas to the Pringles mascot.

Wiig and Mumolo co-wrote and star in the film, their first project together since 2011's Bridesmaids scored them an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The goofy Barb and Star is similar in that it's also a comedy about female friendship, but it's also a stranger, much more surreal project: The film follows the inseparable Barb and Star as they ultimately decide to leave their Nebraska hometown for the first time ever and take a trip to the fictional Vista Del Mar. Upon arrival, they find themselves swept into a campy, colorful tale of romance, adventure, and a dastardly villain's homicidal plot to kill everyone in town. (There are also musical numbers.)

"I was listening to [the initial] pitch, and I was like, 'What in the world is this movie?'" Greenbaum recalls with a laugh. "But really once I read the script, it was so different, and it was such a return to funny and silly. It was a comedy script that wasn't taking itself too seriously, yet at the center of it is a very sweet, emotional core."

The film also stars Jamie Dornan, Damon Wayans Jr., and Wendi McLendon-Covey. But Greenbaum says Barb and Star are the true, um, stars of the show.

"As silly and funny as Barb and Star are as characters, at their core is a really beautiful, sweet friendship," Greenbaum says. "And that mirrors Kristen and Annie's friendship."
