Free, early Alita: Battle Angel screenings announced by James Cameron

Want to see the new James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez movie Alita: Battle Angel?

Want to see it weeks before anybody else?

And how about for free?

Cameron just announced free, early screenings of the action-adventure film will take place in 30 cities across the country.

The screenings will be held on Wednesday and will include a livestream post-movie Q&A with director Rodriguez, writer-producer Cameron, and cast members Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, and Keean Johnson.

“People may have heard of Alita, but don’t know who she is,” Cameron wrote. “Why is she called the Battle Angel? What is her world like? Well, I think you’ve simply got to see it to believe it. And the best way to see it is in a cinema, and in gorgeous 3D, the way Robert Rodriguez shot it. So we’ve decided to do some special free screenings, for fans around the country, to introduce our Alita to the world. When you see how big a heart she has, and what she stands for, and how she kicks major butt — you’re going to fall in love with her, the way I did.”

Cameron made the announcement on Twitter and his newly launched Facebook and Instagram pages (which have all the entry details above).

Set several centuries in the future, the film based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga tells the story of the cyborg Alita (Salazar) who is salvaged from a scrapyard in Iron City by a compassionate cyber-doctor, Ido (Waltz), and discovers she has unique fighting powers. The film uses advanced motion capture techniques to create 3D-like photo-real characters that brings the film’s manga source material to life.

Alita opens wide on Feb. 14.
