In a big wet kiss to E. L. James and her über-successful Fifty Shades franchise, four friends played by Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda, and Mary Steenburgen take a break from their typically haughty reading list to delve into the sexy world of Christian Grey in Book Club.

In this exclusive first look at the First Wives Club-reminiscent comedy that marks the directorial debut of producer Bill Holderman, Fonda’s saucy Vivian introduces the book to her finicky fellow book clubbers.

“It’s like someone throws a grenade in the room. Their lives go kersplat,” Bergen tells EW. Her character ends up making a comical love connection with Richard Dreyfuss, while her pals hook up with the likes of Don Johnson, Andy Garcia, and Craig T. Nelson. Alicia Silverstone also stars in the comedy, which shot over a two-week period in Los Angeles.

“I jumped on board,” says Bergen. “I was like the person hanging on the train, waving in the wind. I just couldn’t wait to do it.”

The 71-year-old actress, who will reprise her iconic role as an investigative TV journalist in CBS’ revival of Murphy Brown this fall, says she was particularly blown away by Fonda. “Every time she enters a room or even makes calls on the phone, it’s like she’s General Schwarzkopf. She has a waist the size of a teacup and this killer body. She is defying everything. You’re just ashamed of yourself when you’re with her.”

Book Club will hit theaters May 18.
