Lady Gaga's A Star Is Born shifts release to May 2018

Warner Bros. will birth A Star Is Born four months early.

EW has confirmed the studio has shifted the release date of the Bradley Cooper-directed, Lady Gaga-starring musical romance from Sept. 28, 2018 to May 18, 2018.

The project, which marks Cooper’s directorial debut, filmed throughout spring and summer of this year. It’s the fourth take on the classic Hollywood tale, which first launched in 1937 under the direction of William A. Wellman. Janet Gaynor fronted that picture as a young industry ingenue who hones her craft under the guidance of a fading tinseltown veteran. Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand would play various iterations of the role in subsequent films released in 1954 and 1976, respectively.

Per a studio press release, the 2018 version of A Star Is Born follows “Jackson Maine, a country music star who is on the brink of decline when he discovers a talented unknown named Ally [Gaga]. As the two begin a passionate love affair, Jack coaxes Ally into the spotlight, catapulting her to stardom. But as Ally’s career quickly eclipses his own, Jack finds it increasingly hard to handle his fading glory.”

Dave Chappelle, Andrew Dice Clay, and Sam Elliot have supporting roles, while Gaga has composed the film’s original score — most of which was recorded live on set by Oscar-nominated La La Land sound designer Steve Morrow.

The film also marks the first leading part in a fiction film for Gaga, who’s credited on the production by her real name, Stefani Germanotta. She previously won a Golden Globe for her work on the fifth season of Ryan Murphy’s popular anthology series American Horror Story, and had small parts in films like Machete Kills and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. A documentary about her life, directed by Chris Moukarbel, launched Friday on Netflix after a world-premiere screening at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
