Matt Damon gets small in Downsizing trailer

Alexander Payne directed the small-scale satire

Honey, they shrunk Matt Damon.

One of Hollywood’s biggest stars is getting small in the first full trailer for Downsizing, as Damon and Kristen Wiig lead the cast of director Alexander Payne’s latest film.

Downsizing, which premiered to rave reviews at last month’s Venice Film Festival, imagines a scenario where the solution to overpopulation and climate change is Norwegian scientists shrinking people down to five inches tall.

As a diminutive Dave Johnson (Jason Sudeikis) tells his buddy Paul Safranek (Damon), “Downsizing takes the pressure right off. … We live like kings. We’ve got the best houses, the best restaurants — Cheesecake Factory, we’ve got three of ’em!”

Plus, the $52,000 nest egg saved by Paul and wife Audrey (Wiig) translates to $12.5 million once they’re tiny. What more could you want?

In a recent interview with EW, Payne discussed the film’s satirical tone. “When [co-writer] Jim [Taylor] and I decided to do something with the idea, we saw it in more political terms,” he said. “I don’t want it to sound too much like a political movie. We’re more interested in making human films. Humans are involved in politics, so we thought this story was an interesting prism through which to view our times.”

Also starring Christoph Waltz and Hong Chau, Downsizing zaps into theaters on Dec. 22. Watch the new trailer above.
