Movies Death Note director talks sequel possibilities 'There's a lot of different places we can take it,' says filmmaker Adam Wingard By Clark Collis Clark Collis Senior Writer EW's editorial guidelines Published on August 22, 2017 09:27AM EDT In director Adam Wingard’s new Netflix film Death Note (out Aug. 25), a high school student named Light (Nat Wolff) is gifted a mystical, and deadly, book by a mysterious Willem Dafoe-voiced deity. Will everything turn out okay in the end of this movie, which is adapted from the Japanese comic by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata? Well, that would be telling. But we can tell you that Wingard’s plan is for this film to be the launch pad for more Death Note movies. “When I first pitched the movie to Netflix, that was my main thing,” says the filmmaker, whose previous directing credits include You’re Next and The Guest and is currently prepping monster face-off Godzilla vs. Kong. “This film is very much an origin story and there’s a lot of different places we can take it. The movie really works as a closed loop. But I think ultimately it is a great property to explore. There’s a lot of things that could happen from here. I would love to [be involved]. I am doing Godzilla vs Kong now, so that’s, like, two-and-a-half-years at least, so it depends on the timing. Depending on when they want to do it, I would definitely be involved in terms of the story and all that kind of stuff.” Death Note also stars Lakeith Stanfield, Margaret Qualley, Shea Whigham, and Masi Oka.
