Disney becomes first studio ever to cross $7 billion at the global box office

The House of Mouse is officially the movie studio champion of 2016 — and it has the box office receipts to prove it.

Just a few days after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit theaters, Walt Disney Studios has announced that as of Monday, it is officially the first studio to cross $7 billion in global box office receipts. Thanks to popular 2016 releases from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, the studio now holds the industry record for the biggest global box office haul in a single year, boasting $2.7 billion domestically and $4.29 billion internationally.

“This historic achievement is possible because all of our film studios are bringing their absolute best to the table, telling great stories of all kinds that resonate with audiences across borders, gender, and generations,” Disney chairman Alan Horn said in a statement. “These films work because each one has not only something for everyone, but everything for someone. It’s our honor to be able to create these experiences for audiences, and we’re thankful to them for continuing to come out to the theater with us.”

Rogue One, which opened this weekend to a whopping $290.5 million worldwide, is only the latest hit in a string of Disney successes. The studio currently holds five of this year’s 10 biggest movie releases, including Captain America: Civil War ($1.15 billion worldwide), Finding Dory ($1.03 billion), Zootopia, ($1.02 billion), The Jungle Book ($966.6 million), and Doctor Strange ($652.8 million).

Other releases like Moana and Pete’s Dragon helped boost the bottom line, and last year’s juggernaut Star Wars: The Force Awakens added another $284.7 million domestically in 2016.

Universal set the previous record last year with a $6.89 billion total, thanks to hits like Jurassic World and Furious 7.
