Erika Alexander tears up after Living Single costar Queen Latifah surprises her on The Drew Barrymore Show: 'I love her'

Nothing could've prepared Erika Alexander for the surprise Living Single reunion she had with costar Queen Latifah while visiting The Drew Barrymore Show on Friday.

The actress, who starred as Max on the influential 1990s sitcom, became visibly emotional when Latifah suddenly appeared onscreen to ask her a series of questions as part of the talk show’s recurring game, the Final Five. 

"Hey Erika! Surprise, it’s Dana! Queen Latifah to everyone else," she said. "Listen, we had so much fun doing Living Single that I think the world needs to share a little bit of that, so I’m here for Final Five."

Upon seeing Latifah, Alexander quickly turned to the camera and shouted, "No!" She then began to laugh and shake her head in shock. 

Before answering her former costar's question about her favorite behind-the-scenes moment, Alexander thanked host Drew Barrymore for bringing her and Latifah together again. "It’s been a while since I’ve seen her. I love her," she said, her voice becoming choked up as she dabbed at her eyes. "Congratulations on The Equalizer, she’s a mommy now, everything."

As it turns out, Alexander's most memorable backstage experience was the inventive ways that she and her Living Single costars — also including Kim Fields and  Kim Coles — would pass the time together in their dressing rooms. "We used to have so much fun and we would undress in front of each other and compare breasts," she recalled before bursting into laughter. "And I had the smallest in there, which is saying something, because they were some big begonias going all around."

Alexander noted that the cast "really cheered each other on" at a time when they were "considered bigger women" on television. "To actually go and have our first person that saw us in wardrobe go, 'Look at that! Look at how they’re sitting up, those are fine,'" she continued. "We gave ourselves a lot of encouragement. So, yes, I remember that a lot. A lot of body positivity."

"That is — Thank you!" Barrymore exclaimed. "You’re the best at this game!"

"Well, you shocked me with her," Alexander replied, pointing at the screen before adding, "In a good way."

Living Single, which centered around the complicated personal and professional lives of a group of friends living in a Brooklyn brownstone, debuted on Fox in 1993, a year before Friends premiered on NBC. Cress Williams, Terrence "T.C." Carson, and Mel Jackson rounded out a cast featuring all Black leads. During a 2017 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Latifah revealed that she was "working on" a revival of the series, adding, "It’s not there yet, but hopefully we can get it happening."
