Kathy Griffin crying 'tears of joy' over conviction of former and forever enemy Donald Trump

Kathy Griffin is rejoicing over today's historic conviction of former President Donald Trump on 34 felony counts, tweeting that she's crying "tears of joy."

Griffin was responding to a tweet from an X user who wrote that the comedian was "targeted" by Trump, who is "finally getting in trouble for his mobster antics."

"Thank you for saying that," Griffin wrote. "It was awful and he is awful. TEARS OF JOY." Over on Threads, she expressed her shock, writing, "The criminal justice system works sometimes."

The "awful" "it" she's referring to is no doubt the backlash she faced for posting a photo of herself holding a a styrofoam head covered in ketchup, decorated to resemble a decapitated then-President Trump in May 2017.

Griffin and members of her family received death threats, she lost gigs, including co-hosting New Years Eve on CNN, and she thought that she would never work again. She was also the subject of an investigation by the Secret Service.

“I don’t think I will have a career after this,” a teary Griffin said at a press conference addressing the controversial photo. “He [Trump] broke me. He broke me.” She then added, “Trump is trying to ruin my life. [If] you don’t stand up you get run over… This is America. You shouldn’t have to die for it. Death threats are constant and specific. Today it’s me. Tomorrow it could be you.”

Griffin initially issued an apology video on then-Twitter, saying, “I sincerely apologize. I’m a comic. I crossed the line … I went way too far. The image is too disturbing, I understand how it offends people, I get it.”

However, a scant three months later, in classic Kathy Griffin fashion, she rescinded her apology during an appearance on an Australian talk show, saying, "I am no longer sorry, the whole outrage was B.S., the whole thing got so blown out of proportion."

Griffin continued her non-apology tour on The View the following year, after she sold out Carnegie Hall in less than 24 hours for her new standup tour.

“I take the apology back. F— him,” Griffin said. “I’m not holding back on this family. This family is different. I’ve been through the mill.”

She then went on to compare the different standards to which she was held.

“I wanted to make a statement about what a misogynist [Trump] is, and I remembered the eight years of photos [circulated online] of an Obama lynching, and nobody said anything, it was all on Facebook … people were going to rallies with Hillary’s head decapitated, they get away with everything.”

Well, it seems, not everything.
